Our 2nd graders completed their beautiful "Ojos de Dios" (God's Eyes) - the culmination of a special story about a mother who had to make a gift for el Dios Sol. 2nd grade parents: Ask your child to tell you the story of the mother - ¡en español si sea posible! You might be amazed at how much they remember when the language comes wrapped in narrative and meaning. This is the power of story in language learning. When children experience language through imagination and create something beautiful with their hands, the words stick in ways that worksheets never could.

Waldorf Alum Wednesday: Meet Dr. Jane Bright, SMWS alum and theoretical astrophysicist! This August, Jane joins CU Boulder as an NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascend Postdoc Fellow, where she'll spend three years researching stellar dynamics around merging supermassive black hole binaries.

Jane's journey from our mountain campus led her to dual bachelor's degrees in math and physics, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from University of Arizona.

Jane's path beautifully illustrates how our holistic Waldorf curriculum—balancing rigorous academics with creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on exploration—prepares students to excel in any field they choose. Now she's combining her research expertise with her passion for education, collaborating with PhET to build interactive astronomy simulations.

From studying gravitational interactions in the Andromeda galaxy to mentoring undergraduate researchers to creating new tools for astronomy education - Jane embodies how SMWS graduates follow their curiosity and use their knowledge to serve the world.

Faculty Friday Spotlight: Bridget Law 🎻

Our incredible strings teacher Bridget Law is currently on tour across the Pacific Northwest & Michigan, with her group ! You can catch them this September at "Smalltown for the Cause" in Salida!

There will be two nights of music by Elephant Revival, yoga & music classes, & family-friendly activities at Riverside Park. The festival prides itself on being "intimate and intentional."

This is our Bridget in her element: bringing music, community, and conscious living together. We're so proud to have a faculty member who lives these values both in her classrooms and out in the world.

Last week, our kindergartners took their Golden Knights Hike—a special tradition marking their upcoming transition to First Grade. As the culmination of our robust, multi-year Early Childhood Education program, this outdoor journey reflects our school's commitment to nurturing a deep, lifelong connection to nature. Here they are, their last kindergarten adventure, setting off into the mountains, filled with wonder and courage.

Congratulations to the SMWS Class of 2025! The Shining Mountain Waldorf School community is proud to honor these four exceptional graduates as they begin the next exciting chapter of their lives:

-Finn – Colorado School of Mines

We celebrated the Class of 2025 at their graduation ceremony on Friday, May 30, 2025. We reflected on their journeys, listened to their voices, and now send them forward with confidence and admiration as they pursue what comes next. They have expressed interest in studying Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Architectural Engineering, and Architectural Design.

Each of these students found inspiration and direction through the school’s holistic, arts-integrated curriculum—which fosters both creative thinking and academic rigor. Their chosen fields reflect not only personal passion, but also the breadth and depth of a Waldorf education.

Recently named the Best Private School in Boulder by Boulder Weekly, SMWS is proud to share in the accomplishments of these inspiring students.
