After following up on several potential “smoke” calls from yesterday’s storm, we finally found an active fire.
We were able to assist the Forest Service in keeping this smoldering lightning strike out of Bernice contained this afternoon.

Thanks to all the citizens of this community who have been watching the hills for smoke!

It’s been a busy week for us. We have handled 8 calls since the 29th. Thanks to Jefferson County Montana Sheriff's Office Dispatchers and deputies for helping along with Boulder Ambulance Service providing fire fighter rehab for us at 1 this morning. This Thursday at 6:30PM there will be a fire meeting at the city firehall and would like to talk to you about joining the department.

🔥 Queen Gulch Fire Update 🔥

Location: 14 miles NE of Boulder, MT; 1.5 miles SE of Crow Peak; 3.75 miles E of Elkhorn
Start Date: Tuesday, July 28, 2026
Cause: Undetermined
Completion/Containment: 0%
Resources: Type 2 IA crew, Prescott Hotshot Crew, and two Type 1 helicopters

Yesterday, firefighters observed very minimal fire activity with slow smoldering. Firefighters extinguished all spot fires and determined the wildfire covers 8–9 acres. A saw line was constructed to the southern edge, giving firefighters direct access to the fire perimeter and a route for emergency services.

Current Operations:
The wildfire transitioned to a Type 3 incident management team today. Firefighters are implementing a direct extinguishment strategy starting from the south and southwest perimeter of the fire. Type 1 helicopters will continue to support with water drops, as needed.

Hazards:
The fire area contains many burning snags and dead timber, both fallen and standing, on steep and rocky terrain. These conditions create serious hazards for firefighters. Although fire activity has been minimal, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect this weekend, which may increase fire activity.

Road Closure:
US Forest Service Road 8578 is closed. Please avoid all roads and trails between Elkhorn/Queen Gulch and Leslie Lake.

The closures are necessary for public safety and to allow firefighters and emergency vehicles to operate without obstruction.

Weather:
Red Flag Warning is in effect this afternoon through Sunday evening due to hot temperatures up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, gusty winds up to 50 MPH and relative humidity as low as 9 percent.
