The California State Parks Backpacking Adventures team (CASPBA) is stoked to be heading back to Big Basin! This trip hikes from Castle Rock State Park to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, featuring incredible views and towering coast redwoods along the way.

Great news from Big Basin Redwoods State Park — Sequoia Trail is reopening this Friday, May 22!
For the first time since the 2020 wildfires impacted the park, visitors can once again hike this beloved 2.9-mile trail to the beautiful Sempervirens Falls.

Huge appreciation for the many volunteers and trail crews that worked hard to make this trail opening happen!

We are expecting a busy holiday weekend so please plan accordingly. Reservations are NOT required to visit the park but there is limited parking in the day use area, you can reserve parking ahead of time using the link on the park website, arrive earlier or later in the day or use our summer weekend shuttle service to the parking overflow lot. Visitors can also take Santa Cruz METRO directly to the park, with free park entry for bus riders.

✨Saturday, May 16: Guided nature walks at 9am 🌅 and 2pm 🌞

🌿 9am–11am: Join Big Basin’s docent botanist 🌱👩‍🔬 on a 2 to 3 mile walk 🚶‍♂️ through the woods 🌲🌳 focusing on the plants of Big Basin.

🌎 2pm–4pm: Join Big Basin’s docent and staff member 👩‍🏫 for a 2 mile walk 🚶‍♀️ covering the various ecosystems 🌼🦋 of Big Basin.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Both walks are family friendly.

💵 Participation is free; however, a $10 vehicle day-use fee 🚗 is required upon arrival.

🌷Come enjoy the glorious greens and wildflower blossoms of spring at Big Basin!

Spring Walk Through the Redwoods

March 28th, 10am-2pm

🚶 Join us for a refreshing spring stroll along North Escape Road, a gentle out-and-back beneath the towering recovering redwoods, where the sunlight illuminates fresh new growth and the forest floor is filled with ferns and an occasional wildflower. As we wander, we'll listen for the songs of chickadees and wrens and watch for woodpeckers tapping high above. This 4-mile walk is perfect for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and welcome spring in the redwood forest. Meet docents Karen DeMello and Eva Fewel at the temporary visitor center in the main parking lot.

Dress in layers, bring water (there is no potable water at the park) and a snack. 🌲

Are you looking for a fun job this summer? Do you enjoy being outside and working with the public? You might be a good fit for a seasonal interpreter position!

Santa Cruz District is now recruiting seasonal interpreters for summer 2026. Starting pay is $20.90 per hour. Positions work full-time from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend, staffing visitor centers and providing interpretive programming to park visitors, including guided walks, Junior Rangers programs, and campfire programs.

Work locations include Sunset and Manresa State Beaches, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and Castle Rock and Portola Redwoods State Parks. Housing is available for the Portola Redwoods State Park position.
