As Pride Month brings together communities in celebration of inclusion, acceptance and the strength of the LGBTQ+ community, Boston Public Schools is proud to recognize two outstanding student leaders, whose advocacy and compassion are making a lasting impact across their school communities and beyond.

Boston Latin Academy Grade 12 student Nuriel Gutman and John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science Grade 12 student Samantha Lee have been named recipients of the 2026 Jeff Perrotti LGBTQ+ Leadership Award from the The Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth.

Supporting student mental health starts early.

Boston Public Schools was honored to welcome Executive Office of Health and Human Services Secretary Kiame Mahaniah, MD, MBA and Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Commissioner Emily Bailey to Mozart Elementary School in Roslindale to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month with our Department of Student Support.

Students participated in a reading of “Isaac’s Story,” a story walk, student-led activities, and a special band performance – all focused on helping young people understand that caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health.

Thank you to our state and school partners for helping create safe, supportive spaces where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

The City of Boston is proud of you, Sanjay!

Eliot K-8 Innovation School Grade 6 student Sanjay Malhotra represented Boston this week in Washington, D.C., at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) Citywide Spelling Bee in March.

Sanjay advanced to Round 3 while competing against the nation’s top young spellers, and we couldn’t be prouder of his preparation, perseverance, and poise on the national stage.

Congratulations, Sanjay! We can’t wait to see you compete again next year.

Boston Public Schools celebrated the Class of 2026 students who earned the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy during the district’s annual Seal of Biliteracy Districtwide Awards Celebration on Wednesday, May 20, at Josiah Quincy Upper School. This year, BPS students earned a total of 552 Seal of Biliteracy awards across 523 recipients, marking continued growth in the district’s biliteracy achievements. The number of Seal awards has more than doubled since 2024, increasing from 245 awards in 2024 to 426 in 2025.

The American Cancer Society's VOICES of Black Women study seeks 100K Black women to participate in a long-term study to improve prevention, diagnosis, and health-care outcomes.

Boston Public Schools and Mayor Michelle Wu 吳弭 honored our 33 top graduates today at Fenway Park at the annual Valedictorians Luncheon, celebrating their outstanding academic achievements, leadership, and perseverance.

These exceptional students challenged themselves through Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Early College coursework while also maintaining the highest standards of excellence outside of the classroom.

This year’s valedictorians reflect the strength and diversity of Boston Public Schools:

⭐ 18 will be the first in their families to attend college
⭐ 15 are “home-grown” students who attended BPS between kindergarten and Grade 12.
⭐ 13 were born outside of the United States
⭐ Students represent countries including Brazil, Cape Verde, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru, Ukraine, Vietnam, and the United States
⭐ 9 earned the Seal of Biliteracy

Each valedictorian received a citation from the Boston School Committee and Superintendent, along with a $100 Amazon e-gift card.

Thank you to the Redsox and Eastern Bank Foundation for sponsoring this year’s celebration and helping us honor these remarkable students and their bright futures ahead!

Today, Boston Public Schools honors the courageous men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. On Memorial Day, we pause to remember their sacrifice, reflect on their bravery, and express our deepest gratitude to the families who continue to honor their legacy.

Some Boston Public Schools sports stars are ready to shine next year!

About 250 BPS student-athletes received FREE pre-participation physical examinations May 16 at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School thanks to our partnership with Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine. Students received physical exams, screenings, and support to help ensure they can safely participate in athletics next school year.

This annual event helps remove barriers to care and expands access to essential health services for our student-athletes and families.

Huge thanks to the Mass General Brigham volunteers, BPS Health Services, and Boston Legacy FC for supporting our students!

Four hundred-plus students, staff and family members gathered Wednesday, May 20, at our third annual Seal of Biliteracy Awards Ceremony. The event celebrated students’ biliteracy accomplishment and the power of multilingualism!

The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduating students who have achieved high levels of proficiency in English and at least one additional language – a powerful accomplishment that reflects the strength of our diverse Boston Public Schools community.

Congratulations to all 518 of our Class of 2026 Seal of Biliteracy earners! Your dedication to multilingualism and multiliteracy prepares you to connect and lead in a global society.
