People are starving themselves to be heard. More than 300 detainees at Delaney Hall in Newark have been on a hunger and labor strike since May 22nd — and ICE has responded with rubber bullets, pepper spray, and protesters shoved into traffic. Mainstream media isn't covering this. So we are.

In May 1865, nearly 10,000 freed Black people in Charleston gave 267 Union soldiers, who were dumped in a mass grave by Confederate captors, a proper burial. It's considered the first Memorial Day. For over a century, white Charlestonians buried that story.

Those soldiers died in a war that killed 600,000 people. When the Union needed somewhere to bury its dead, they chose Robert E. Lee's own plantation, where enslaved people had worked. That land became Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place of over 420,000 Americans.

Across the river on the National Mall, they built the Lincoln Memorial. For a hundred years, those two landmarks have faced each other — a deliberate symbol of the war, its cost, and its reckoning.

Now, Trump wants to build a 250-foot golden arch right between them. It would block that view entirely. 100% of public comments opposed it. Veterans are suing to stop it.

This Memorial Day, honor the fallen — and refuse to let their history be erased.
