Suffolk County Sheriff's Department - Boston, MA One of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country. Sheriff Steven Tompkins mission is to serve the citizens of Boston, Revere, Chelsea & Winthrop.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department employs more than 1,000 custody and non–custody staff to help ensure the efficient and effective operations of the Department’s two facilities – the Suffolk County House of Correction and the Nashua Street Jail – as well as comprehensive off–site training center. The Sheriff’s Department is mandated to enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and to serve and pr

otect the citizens of Suffolk County. We accomplish this mission by:
Maintaining safe and secure custody and control of inmates and pre-trial detainees; and
Enhancing public safety by seeking ways to effectively reduce offender recidivism. To meet the challenges presented by this obligation, we must set goals that inform and improve our relationship with both the public and each other. External Goal: To enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and to serve and protect the citizens of Suffolk County, by:
Meeting and exceeding state and national corrections standards for all Department operations; and
Becoming an accessible public resource by identifying shared goals between the Sheriff’s Department and Suffolk County’s communities and working to achieve them.

Last night, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department celebrated the graduation of COTA Class 26-02 at Winthrop High School!

The graduates were officially sworn in by Special Sheriff Mark Lawhorne, who welcomed them to the institution and reflected on the importance of public safety, professional service, and creating a positive change in the communities and the individuals we serve.

The ceremony was honored by the presence of the Massachusetts Department of Correction Honor Guard presenting the Colors and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard, as well as State Senator Lydia Edwards, State Representative Jeffrey Turco, and Winthrop Police Chief John Goodwin.

We also proudly recognized SCSD Sergeant Dennis DeCarney, recipient of the Sheriff’s Outstanding Service Award, for his dedication and unwavering commitment to public safety.

Congratulations to Sergeant DeCarney and all of our sixteen graduates of COTA Class 26-02. Your commitment, professionalism, and integrity will continue to shape the future of public safety.

Special thanks to the Winthrop Police Department and Winthrop High School for their support in making the ceremony possible.

For years, Chef Faison has carried his premiere NECAT curriculum into the Suffolk County House of Correction, preparing a countless number of residents for future culinary careers.

In this episode, Chef Faison reveals his journey into the culinary arts, from a young aspiring pastry chef in the 90’s to a trusted mentor in the kitchen for folks behind bars and reintegrating back into society. A recent contestant on Season 24 of Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Faison pulls back the curtain to his time on the show and his experience throughout his television debut.

Yesterday, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department joined volunteers from the Corey C. Griffin Foundation, Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy Lower Mills, MAMLEO, and other community partners at the 6th annual Back to School BBQ & School Supply Event.

After incoming students collected their new backpacks and school supplies, children and families visited the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department table to receive free notebooks, pencils, and other SCSD swag.

Just another way SCSD enjoys giving back to the community! 📓
