Suffolk County Sheriff's Department - Boston, MA One of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country. Sheriff Steven Tompkins mission is to serve the citizens of Boston, Revere, Chelsea & Winthrop.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department employs more than 1,000 custody and non–custody staff to help ensure the efficient and effective operations of the Department’s two facilities – the Suffolk County House of Correction and the Nashua Street Jail – as well as comprehensive off–site training center. The Sheriff’s Department is mandated to enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and to serve and protect the citizens of Suffolk County. We accomplish this mission by:
Maintaining safe and secure custody and control of inmates and pre-trial detainees; and
Enhancing public safety by seeking ways to effectively reduce offender recidivism. To meet the challenges presented by this obligation, we must set goals that inform and improve our relationship with both the public and each other. External Goal: To enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and to serve and protect the citizens of Suffolk County, by:
Meeting and exceeding state and national corrections standards for all Department operations; and
Becoming an accessible public resource by identifying shared goals between the Sheriff’s Department and Suffolk County’s communities and working to achieve them.

Last week, a group of Masters students from Suffolk University visited the Suffolk County Jail for a tour facilitated by Superintendent Matthew Decastro.

Following their tour, residents of the Project EVOLVE unit joined the students for an honest discussion about their experiences within the program and their perspectives on opportunities for carceral system reform. This discussion, led by the students, will go on to inform their research throughout the remainder of the semester.
