I enjoyed some barbecue and met some great folks at the annual Ware Grange Fair on Saturday.

The National Grange became the first nationwide farm organization in 1867. We have many strong Granges in Massachusetts, including four in the Senate district I represent.

The Ware Grange offers gardening classes, events for young people and of course, the annual fair which had some great exhibits this year.

Yesterday my staff and I had a great time at the Holden Senior Center's annual barbecue handing out ice cream sandwiches and meeting so many wonderful seniors.

The partnership between the senior center and DPW made this event run so smoothly; the food was great and everyone had fun.
It was nice to see the center open after being closed for a time so the new parking lot project could be completed. It's such an improvement over the old parking lot and will serve the seniors well for a long time.

Economic development comes in many forms and on Tuesday we heard about how the state’s Employer Child Care Innovation Fund will help businesses in North Central Massachusetts to find and retain employees through the expansion of reliable childcare.

Close to $2 million was awarded from this fund to help create additional, affordable childcare in Massachusetts. The United Way of North Central Massachusetts received $800,000 in grant funding.

Heywood Healthcare in Gardner is serving as first employer pilot program for the Employers & Childcare Coalition of North Central Massachusetts. The program will help Heywood employees who have found it difficult to secure reliable childcare in an area where demand outweighs supply.

Knowing their children are being cared for while they work helps employees who may have weighed leaving their jobs because they could not find or afford childcare.

I look forward to watching the results of this program. I hope it is successful and becomes a model for other areas.

Great day at Holden Days!

It was wonderful to spend the day catching up with so many friends, families, local businesses, and community organizations. Events like this are a great reminder of what makes Holden such a special community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, and to all of the organizers, volunteers, vendors, and town officials who helped make another Holden Days a success.

Come on down to Holden Days!

It’s a beautiful day here in Holden, and there’s still plenty of time to stop by, enjoy the festivities, and support our local community.

Holden Days runs until 3 PM today — hope to see you here!

Four towns in the Worcester and Hampshire District will benefit from the recently awarded Volunteer Fire Capacity Program grants which are crucial for rural communities which rely on call and volunteer fire departments.

In 2025, Massachusetts experienced 1,161 wildfires, which burned an approximate total 925 acres. Many of those fires were fought by small, rural fire departments and we know, fighting wildfires requires different equipment and training.

"I am very happy to see more than $10,000 coming to some of the small communities in my district," said State Senator Peter Durant. "A grant for one town is really a grant for several towns given the nature of fighting forest fires in communities that rely so heavily on one another for mutual aid. I am also grateful to our federal partners who fund this program and to DCR which administers the grant for recognizing the needs in the district."

I have been very proud to receive awards during my career as a legislator and Tuesday was one of the proudest days as Scott Connor, Grace Connor and Lisa McPhee from The American Legion Department of Massachusetts presented me with the Legislator of the Year Award for 2026.

Veterans are so special to me. I stand in awe of these men and women who are willing to lay down their life to protect our freedom and I will always strive to honor them through my work in the legislature.

I joined State Rep. Donnie Berthiaume and State Rep. Paul Frost at Leicester's Public Safety Day on Tuesday.

We had a great time meeting the K9s from Leicester and Dudley, checking out the mobile command center operated by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office and seeing the Life Flight medical helicopter.

Leicester Fire Department showed off their trucks and ambulances - all very impressive!

There were tables set up inside Town Hall with so much useful information from many agencies which allowed my staff to make connections with folks who can help us to better help my constituents.

The annual Hardwick Fair is a labor of love for so many volunteers who make this wonderful event happen every year!

On Friday night, we honored fair volunteer Pam Hinckley who moved to town nearly 50 years ago and became a beloved home economics teacher. She ran a seamstress shop and has taught many people to sew and knit. Pam's presence as a fair volunteer in the Fiber Arts section of the fair has been legendary and when she spoke about her love of Hardwick her eyes were filled with joyful tears. The fair was dedicated to her this year and I was honored to present her with a citation from the State Senate alongside State Rep. Donnie Berthiaume who brought a citation from the House of Representatives recognizing her good work.

Saturday morning I joined the fair's pancake crew - another amazing group of volunteers - making pancakes at the griddle with Mark Korzec. The pancake crew operates like a well-oiled machine and we had a great time.

Agricultural fairs are a big part of our culture in the Worcester and Hampshire District and I look forward to more of these events in the weeks leading into fall.

Yesterday I attended quite a celebration as Home Depot opened its new Flat Bed Distribution and Bulk Distribution Center in Westminster.

This enormous warehouse created more than 200 new jobs that will help families to thrive in our area. The energy and excitement was palpable in the sea of orange safety vests.

Home Depot also gives back to the community and presented Dr. Hayden Duggan, Founder of the On-Site Academy, with a $5,000 donation. The Academy is a wonderful non-profit treatment and training center which provides residential counseling services for first responders.

Home Depot does a beam-cutting ceremony to open its new locations and they also now have a citation from the State Senate to hang in this amazing new facility.
