Today, the Cape Verdean Association of Boston proudly honors the life and legacy of Amílcar Cabral, a visionary leader whose commitment to justice, dignity, unity, and education continues to inspire generations.

Through our Cabral Leadership & Innovation Center (CLIC), we carry that legacy forward by investing in and empowering young people to become confident leaders, engaged community members, and changemakers.

Cabral believed deeply in the power of education and the importance of preparing people to shape their own future. At CLIC, we strive to put those values into action by giving our youth the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to lead and make a positive impact in their communities.

💚❤️💛 Today, we remember Amílcar Cabral not only for the history he made, but for the values he left behind. His vision continues to live through the young people we empower and the communities we build together.

Earlier this week, we all learned of the tragic event on the island of Fogo near the region of Tcha das Caldeiras and Campana Riba that led to a tremendous loss of life. An unfortunate bus accident injured 14 individuals and took the lives of 25 individuals returning from a field trip--- many of whom were children and adolescent youth.

This situation weights heavy on our hearts. As Cabo Verdean people, we strive to maintain our connection from the diaspora to the island in so many ways. And as a result, we empathize with the unimaginable pain the families in Fogo must be feeling. In addition, many of the individuals who lost their lives are relatives of those who today call Boston their home. Overall, the impact of this great loss has been felt directly and indirectly by many—both near and far.

We know that the government in Cabo Verde has supported families and community members with psychosocial support and burial costs, and at the same time, many organizations and individuals, in the US and abroad, are rallying to help and contribute where they can. We want to do our best to be in partnership and coordinated as we aim to help as well.

With the support of our Cape Verdean Providers Network, our focus at the moment is on connecting local families in Boston with grief and trauma support-- to offer resources and support as they cope with the loss of life and the impact on their families going forward.
Lastly, this Sunday, September 13th at 12:30pm ET, our association, the Cape Verdean Providers Network, the City of Boston, our religious institutions, and members of the community will hold a Candlelight Vigil and a Balloon Release in memory of those who are no longer with us. This is a moment for solidarity and to bring community members together. We hope to create a space to celebrate their life and to remember them as they were.

The Candlelight Vigil and Balloon Release will be held on Sunday, September 13th at Allen Park at 12:30pm ET near St. Peter’s Church, located at 19 Church Street, Dorchester, MA 02122.
