The Boston Athenaeum – a unique combination of library, museum, and cultural center in a magnificent landmark building. We are one of the country’s oldest and most distinguished independent libraries, with a circulating collection of over half a million books, from works published in the 1800s to the latest best sellers. Special collections include active research holdings of 100,000 rare books, m

aps and manuscripts, and 100,000 works of art, from paintings and sculpture to prints and photographs. Members, visitors, and the community enjoy a year-round schedule of cultural programming – author talks, book clubs, exhibitions, concerts, social gatherings, and opportunities for connection. We are united by curiosity about literature, culture, art, ideas, and the world.

Beacon Hill Design Day is back with a new slate of leading authors and designers who will share their perspectives on craft, philosophy, and the enduring principles that shape exceptional interiors and gardens.

As we marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026, the Athenaeum hosted K-12 educators to explore a wide variety of stories and primary sources to use in the classroom that reveal a multitude of stories and perspectives from Revolutionary Boston, including those of enslaved and free Black Bostonians, women, and Indigenous communities.

Fifty years after Constantine Manos photographed Boston for the Bicentennial, these iconic images return with a new dimension: the voices of the people and families pictured. Through newly recorded oral histories, their stories bring the photographs vividly into the present.
