Beacon Hill heard us. 🏛️

On May 27, housing advocates from every corner of Massachusetts gathered at the State House for our annual Lobby Day to push for the homes our communities desperately need.

Together, we met with legislators, shared our stories, and advocated for policies that will lower housing costs and make it easier to build more homes across the Commonwealth.

A huge thank you to Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Senator Brendan Crighton, Representative Andy Vargas, and Marblehead resident David Modica for joining us and inspiring advocates to keep pushing for change.

Whether it was your first time meeting with an elected official or your fiftieth, your voice mattered. Real progress happens when everyday residents show up, speak out, and demand action.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. The movement for abundant housing is growing—and we’re just getting started.

Abundant Housing Massachusetts (AHMA) has announced its endorsement of Newton City Councilor Alison Leary for State Representative for Newton, Watertown, and Waltham.

Founded in 2020 to advocate for the creation of abundant housing for all, AHMA works to develop and support a network of grassroots, pro-housing groups and activists across Massachusetts. As part of its mission, AHMA surveys candidates in local races statewide and supports those who share its commitment to building more homes in their communities.

“AHMA supports candidates that we believe will make real progress on solving the Commonwealth’s housing shortage, and we believe that Alison Leary will do just that,” said Jesse Kanson-Benanav, executive director of AHMA. “On the Newton City Council, Leary demonstrated pro-housing leadership as she advocated for strong compliance with the MBTA Communities Act. Although the city of Newton did not align with her vision, her fight for more homes did not go unnoticed. We are proud to endorse Alison Leary for 10th Middlesex State Representative.”

“I am honored to be endorsed by AHMA,” said Alison Leary. “I share their goals. We have a housing crisis in MA and we need to take stronger action to ensure that more homes actually get built!”

Abundant Housing Massachusetts (AHMA) has announced its endorsement of Cambridge Vice-Mayor Burhan Azeem for State Senate representing Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, and Wi******er.

Founded in 2020 to advocate for the creation of abundant housing for all, AHMA works to develop and support a network of grassroots, pro-housing groups and activists across Massachusetts. As part of its mission, AHMA surveys candidates in local races statewide and supports those who share its commitment to building more homes in their communities.

“Burhan Azeem has already made great strides for more inclusive housing policy in Cambridge,” said Jesse Kanson-Benanav, executive director of AHMA. “We are proud to endorse his campaign for State Senate because we have already seen the progress he’s helped make in battling the housing crisis. Notably Burhan proposed and passed an ambitious multifamily housing zoning overlay that legalized apartments up to 6 stories with high affordability requirements citywide. Burhan has already made affordable housing more of a reality in Cambridge. He will be a strong and results-oriented advocate on Beacon Hill.”

Abundant Housing Massachusetts (AHMA) has announced its endorsement of Senator William Brownsberger for reelection to the State Senate representing the Suffolk and Middlesex district.

Founded in 2020 to advocate for the creation of abundant housing for all, AHMA works to develop and support a network of grassroots, pro-housing groups and activists across Massachusetts. As part of its mission, AHMA surveys candidates in local races statewide and supports those who share its commitment to building more homes in their communities.

Higher construction costs, wasted space, and fewer homes.

One year ago, Massachusetts legalized Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) statewide through the Affordable Homes Act.

The results are encouraging: communities across the Commonwealth issued more than 1,200 ADU permits in the first year alone, creating new opportunities for homeowners and expanding housing choices for residents.

But the lesson from the first year is bigger than ADUs.

Our new report with Boston Indicators, ADUs Turn One, finds that statewide legalization works. When we remove barriers and make it legal to build homes, housing production follows.

At the same time, zoning reform alone is not enough. Builders and homeowners still face a maze of building, energy, fire, septic, stormwater, and other regulatory requirements that can slow or stop housing production.

If just 2% of Massachusetts single-family homes added an ADU, we could create more than 30,000 new homes across the Commonwealth.

The first round of ADU reform is already producing results. Now it’s time to tackle the next generation of barriers standing in the way of more homes.

“For my family even as a two income professional income household, our ability to live in Boston is heavily constrained. We want to grow our roots here but cannot afford to size up in our community because arbitrary [among other reasons] parking mandates.”

Abundant Housing MA Executive Director Jesse Kanson-Benanav testified in support of parking flexibility at Boston City Council on June 4th at 10 am. Currently, the City of Boston has eliminated parking requirements for new affordable housing developments and is looking to expand this mandate to all new residential developments in the city.

The Legalize Starter Homes ballot initiative would make it easier to build homes on smaller lots, helping create more housing options for first-time homebuyers, families, and older adults looking to downsize.

The challenge? We need 12,500 more signatures by June 12 to get this measure on the November ballot.
That's why we're organizing a statewide Weekend of Action on June 6 & 7 to collect signatures and bring this campaign across the finish line.
