Ellis partners with families to provide high quality early childhood education and out-of-school programs in a warm, nurturing environment. A recognized leader in our field, we support children across the socio-economic spectrum, treasure diversity in all forms, and celebrate the joy of childhood. We were founded in 1885 as one of Boston’s first settlement houses. Located in poor urban areas, settlement houses were led and staffed by volunteers and patrons who had the time and financial resources to help improve the living conditions of working families living in poverty. Education was one of the most important services they provided. Throughout our history, we have maintained the commitment and philosophy of the settlement house movement to build a stronger community by addressing the unmet needs of our city’s working families, especially with regard to education. Ellis programs are located in two historic buildings we own at 58 and 66 Berkeley Street in Boston’s South End.

Volunteers from Natixis Investment Managers visited Ellis in September to help us prepare for the new school year. They organized classroom materials, refreshed bulletin boards, and restocked diapers and other supplies that Ellis provides to families in need. Thank you, Natixis IM, for being such a committed partner to Ellis! We look forward to celebrating with you at our big event on October 29th.

Our little explorers in JP are climbing, sliding, catching, throwing, and bouncing! Outdoor play is essential for early childhood development. Not only are students building muscle and coordination, they are solving social problems, taking safe risks, helping their eyesight develop, and getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D! 🌞💪

Some of this week's activities included sensory play with rainbow rice, dough, and Play-Doh, as well as tracing our names with dot markers! Each activity gave our students opportunities to explore their creativity and strengthen their fine motor skills.
