City of Quincy The official page of the City of Quincy, Massachusetts. Quincy is a city in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Quincy became a city in 1888.

It is a major part of Metropolitan Boston and is Boston's immediate southern suburb. It is the 8th largest city in the state. Known as the "City of Presidents," Quincy is the birthplace of two U.S. presidents — John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams — as well as John Hancock, a President of the Continental Congress and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. First settled in 1625, Quincy was briefly part of Dorchester and Boston before becoming the north precinct of Braintree in 1640. In 1792, Quincy was split off from Braintree; the new town was named after Colonel John Quincy, maternal grandfather of Abigail Adams and after whom John Quincy Adams was also named. For more than a century, Quincy was home to a thriving granite industry; the city was also the site of the Granite Railway, the United States' first commercial railroad. Shipbuilding at the Fore River Shipyard was another key part of the city's economy. In the 20th century, both Howard Johnson's and Dunkin' Donuts were founded in the city.

THE WORK CONTINUES. THE NIGHT IS FOR THEM.

Quincy’s working story isn’t only history. Granite workers. Shipbuilders. Construction trades. Public servants. Small business owners. Generations of men and women who punched the clock, raised families and helped build a community.

Today, that tradition continues as people across Quincy put on hard hats, uniforms and work boots to build, repair, protect, teach, care for and serve our city. Different generations. Different jobs. The same pride in a day’s work.

As America marks 250 years, Quincy is celebrating the people whose work helped build the country, including the thousands carrying that legacy forward today.

Join us Sunday, September 6th as we light the sky over Quincy Bay in their honor.

THEY BUILT A CITY.

Look around Quincy and you can see their work everywhere. In our streets and schools, homes and businesses, seawalls and public buildings. Quincy was built, shift by shift and generation by generation, by working men and women.

On September 6th, we’ll celebrate them with fireworks over Quincy Bay as part of Quincy’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Fireworks Over Quincy Bay will be held Sunday, September 6th shortly after 8 p.m. Best viewing from Wollaston Beach and neighborhoods overlooking Quincy Bay.

THEY BUILT THE SHIPS.

For generations, thousands of men and women passed through the gates of Quincy’s shipyards and went to work. Welders. Machinists. Electricians. Pipefitters. Carpenters. Engineers. Laborers. Together, they built vessels that traveled the world — and built livelihoods, families and neighborhoods here at home.

The story of the Quincy shipyard is an American story: people working together, building something larger than themselves. This Labor Day Weekend, Quincy remembers them.

Last night, the Quincy community came together for the 16th Annual Candlelight Vigil, honoring and remembering loved ones whose lives continue to be held close.
