What happened to the rent control ballot question in Massachusetts? You won't see it on your ballots today—but not solely as a result of the state supreme court's rejection of its language on a technicality.
There are important lessons to be learned from the twists and turns of the ballot question initiative's trajectory. Tenant rights activists, socialists, and working people everywhere must recognize the strategic betrayal that took place, by the very proponents of the measure, in a conceding attempt to please the Democrats in power—who repeatedly blocked and watered down the proposal because they answer to the landlord lobby and big corporations.
Attempting to stay in the good graces of "lesser evil" politicians will get us nowhere. We need a new worker's party completely independent of the capitalist interests of the two-party system.
