The Massachusetts Police Association stands in strong support of Boston Police Officer Nicholas O’Malley.
Police officers are routinely required to make split-second decisions in dangerous, uncertain, and rapidly evolving situations. These decisions are made in real time, often in fractions of a second, under intense pressure and with the responsibility of protecting the public, their fellow officers, and themselves. These circumstances must be fully understood and fairly evaluated when reviewing an officer’s actions.
Like every citizen, Officer O’Malley is entitled to the full protections of our justice system, including the presumption of innocence and the fundamental right to due process. That process requires a thorough, deliberate, and impartial review of all facts and evidence before conclusions are drawn.
We are concerned with the speed at which charges were filed in this case. It is not typical for incidents of this complexity and magnitude particularly those involving use of force to be brought forward so quickly without the benefit of a comprehensive investigation. Rushed decisions risk undermining confidence in the fairness and integrity of the process.
The members of the Massachusetts Police Association understand the realities of modern policing and the weight of the decisions officers are called upon to make every day. Our members serve with professionalism and integrity, and they deserve a system that affords them the same fairness and careful consideration expected in any serious legal matter.
We stand in solidarity with Officer O’Malley, his family and the members of the Boston Police Department. The Massachusetts Police Association will continue to advocate for due process, fairness, and a measured approach that ensures justice is both done and seen to be done.
