Senator Jake Oliveira

Senator Jake Oliveira 20-year Public Servant. State Senator for the Hampden, Hampshire & Worcester District. Jake’s grandfather Bolac Bastek helped to build the Quabbin reservoir.

Jake Oliveira is the great-grandson of immigrants from Portugal and Poland who settled in Ludlow, Springfield, and Palmer. They worked in the Ludlow Mills and built strong roots in Western Massachusetts. Growing up, Jake’s dad Rich worked in management for an engineering company, and his mom Carol worked as a secretary and was a member of the Teamsters union. Jake’s dad was laid off when Jake was

8 years old, and he returned to school to become a teacher. While those times weren’t easy for his family, they survived by sticking to the values of family, community, and hard work. Jake’s dad became a Math teacher and went on to teach at Palmer and Ludlow High Schools. Jake was educated entirely through the public education system. He is a third-generation Ludlow High School graduate (Class of ‘04) and an alumnus of Framingham State University. While at Framingham State, Oliveira served three years as an elected member of the campus Board of Trustees. He was a student member of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, which sets policy for the state’s colleges and universities. As a student leader, Jake was a founding member of PHENOM - the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts, which advocates for higher education at the State House. Jake was elected to the Ludlow School Committee in 2009 and served on the body for 12 years. He has distinguished himself as a fierce advocate for public education. He has persistently fought for educational equity. He also serves as Ludlow’s representative to the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, which provides the district’s vocational programs and student transportation for seven school districts. In 2016, Jake was elected the youngest-ever President of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. As President, Jake partnered with school committee members across Massachusetts to lead the fight against expanding charter schools without local approval. Jake was a member of the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Committee, meeting monthly with the Governor or Lieutenant Governor to discuss issues impacting cities and towns in Massachusetts. At the national level, Oliveira has represented the eleven Northeastern states on the National School Boards Association’s board of directors since 2015. Through these roles, Jake has become a leader at the local, regional, state, and national levels. In his professional career, Jake served as the Assistant Executive Officer of the Massachusetts State Universities Council of Presidents, representing the interests of the nine state universities. While at the Council of Presidents, Jake helped implement the legislative strategy that changed the name of seven of the then-state colleges to state universities.

Jake understands the workings and power dynamics of the State House. Early in his career, he served as budget director for Michael Rodrigues, who is now the Chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee. Jake chaired the Ludlow Democratic Town Committee for over 10 years and served as an elected Ludlow Town Meeting member (2005-2009). He is also a former eighth-grade CCD teacher. Jake lives on East Street in Ludlow, next door to his grandmother Lena Oliveira.

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer. It's a reminder of the generations of workers who fought for and won much of what we take for granted in the workplace.

The eight-hour workday. Weekends. Workplace safety protections. Collective bargaining rights. Fair wages. These victories didn't happen by accident; workers organized, stood together, and demanded better.

As Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, I'm proud to continue that work alongside the men and women who keep Massachusetts moving every day.

Happy Labor Day, and thank you to every worker who gets up each day and gets the job done.

Our Lady of Fatima Parish Ludlow, MA's Festa is in full swing! I grabbed some delicious bifana and a Super Bock yesterday. Don't miss out on Western New England's largest Portuguese festival, running for two more days today and tomorrow!

I also stopped into Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Ludlow, MA for a tour as well. A beautiful parish!

There isn't much "little" about the Pleasant View Senior Center's Annual Little E event (except for the goats)! Once again, they went all out yesterday, with something for everyone to enjoy: live music, food, raffles, a petting zoo, a dunk tank, and local organizations connecting residents with resources.

I stopped by with State Representative Brian Ashe and tested my fastball at the dunk tank. Congratulations to the entire Pleasant View team on another fantastic Little E, and thank you to everyone who helped make it happen!

Wonder Kitchen is now available in Springfield!

Wonder offers multiple restaurants and cuisines under one roof with dine-in, takeout, and delivery options, making it easier for families and friends to find something for everyone. And the best part: 25 new local jobs for Western Mass!

I joined the Wonder team, Mayor Sarno, State Representative Orlando Ramos, and community leaders in Springfield to celebrate their Grand Opening and cut the ribbon this week.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Aiden and Kyle of Troop 1849 in Chicopee!

Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout takes years of hard work, leadership, service, and dedication. It was a pleasure to celebrate Aiden and Kyle over the weekend and recognize all they have accomplished on their Scouting journey by presenting them with citations on behalf of the Senate.

Congratulations to both of these outstanding young leaders, their families, and everyone at Troop 1849 who helped them reach this incredible milestone!

It was a beautiful day with friends and neighbors in Ludlow on Saturday for the third annual Color Ludlow with Love! Together we celebrated the diversity, inclusion, and sense of belonging that make our community stronger.

Thank you to Kelly De Gobbi, the entire Diversity, Inclusion, and Acceptance in Ludlow - DIAL team, the volunteers, vendors, community organizations, and everyone who put so much time and energy into ensuring everyone feels welcomed, supported, and valued in the community they call home.

I'm proud to call the Town of Ludlow home and grateful to everyone who continues working to make our town a place where everyone is included.

Another day, another ribbon-cutting!

This weekend, I joined Springfield Armory National Historic Site Superintendent Kelly Fellner, Congressman Richard Neal, Mayor Domenic Sarno, representatives from the offices of Senator Adam Gomez and Carlos Gonzalez State Representative, and Boomer to cut the ribbon on a new permanent accessible entrance to the historic Armory building.

The new ramp is part of a $650,000 project to improve universal accessibility to the building that houses the Armory's visitor center, museum, collections, and offices. Constructed by veteran-owned LJV Development, this investment will help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience this important piece of Springfield and our nation's history.

The ribbon-cutting kicked off a full day of events for the Armory's "Forging Freedom: Celebrating 250 Years of American Military Manufacturing," featuring historical reenactments, military demonstrations and vehicles, traditional trades, a Black Hawk helicopter landing on the Armory Green, and much more.

Thank you to Superintendent Fellner and the entire Springfield Armory team for preserving and sharing 250 years of history while ensuring this national treasure is accessible to all.

The Chicopee School Department officially has a new home!

On Friday, I joined Chicopee Public Schools, local and state leaders to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Chicopee School Department's new permanent home at 229 Exchange Street in downtown Chicopee.

More than just a new office, this space gives the district a permanent, accessible home where educators, students, and families can more easily connect with the people and resources that support Chicopee's schools. Its central downtown location along PVTA bus routes will help make school administration more accessible and strengthen the connection between the district and the community it serves.

Congratulations to the entire Chicopee Public Schools community on the official opening of your new home. I look forward to seeing the difference this space will make for Chicopee's students, families, and educators for years to come!

-with the City of Chicopee - Mayor's Office, Superintendent Ware, Senator Adam Gomez, Senator John Velis, Shirley for Chicopee, City Councilors Abigail Arriaga, Shane Brooks, Sam Shumsky, and George Balakier, and School Committee members Grace Schofield, Robert Cantin, Jason Dout, Sonny Brooks, and Ray Nazario.
