VFW Post 4588 and Auxiliary

VFW Post 4588 and Auxiliary Supporting veterans, service members, and their families, as well as communities worldwide. Many arrived home wounded or sick.

We trace our roots back to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. There was no medical care or veterans' pension, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, they banded together and formed organizations that would one day become known as the Vete

rans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. Today, membership stands at more than 1.5 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary. The VFW was instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration and developing the national cemetery system in the fight for compensation for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange and those diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century gave expanded educational benefits to America's active duty service members and members of the guard and reserves fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW was the driving force behind the Veterans Access and Accountability Act of 2014 and continually fought for improved VA medical center services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II, and Women in Military Service memorials, in 2005, the VFW became the first veteran's service organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. And in 2015, we became the first supporter of the National Desert Storm War Memorial, which is planned for construction in our nation's capital. The VFW has many programs and services that work to support veterans, service members, and their families, as well as communities worldwide.

We are looking for units and individuals to sign up to commemorate this time of reflection on key topics at the event.

The sign-up code on the flyer or link here below will enable units to signup for shift coverage – this ensures watch over the participants safety and monitor the event until the next unit arrives.

“Individuals” will sign-up to keep someone on the track at all 24-hour slots whether running or walking. They will have an opportunity to carry the U.S. or POW/MIA Flag around the track, stop and read posters, or walk as a group talking about key topics and time of reflection. There will be a completion survey at the end of their time.

We are focusing on filling the “Unit slots” to have at least 2 people at all times to help watch over the track participants in case something happens for safety reasons and register the individuals before they start their run/walk time. Unit slots are scheduled for 1 hour “Watch” duty. You can sign-up for more slots as well.

OLD FUDDY DUDDY CLUB, "OFDC"

Our August OFDC lunch was held at the Post, with a very special program.

Thanks to Auxiliary member Terri Fike, who had contacted Quilts of Valor, we received 3 stunning quilts, each created by hand, along with a pillow case, and presented them to our 3 WWII veterans.

Randy Campbell, Post Commander, presented Lee, George, and Tom a certificate, Terri read a short bio, while Pam and Lavetra (hidden) held each quilt up.

21 veterans and 6 family members were on hand to enjoy grilled hamburgers and hotdogs (with all the fixin's), baked beans, potatoe salad, macaroni salad, and desserts.

Thanks to Greg, for manning the grill; Lavetra, Pam, Terri, Lisa, and Chris for preparation and clean-up; and Randy for continuing to honor and celebrate our older veteran members this way.

It is always a real joy to spend time together.
