Over the past week, we’ve been inspired by the resilience of families in our community who are overcoming the challenges posed by the government shutdown, and by those who have stepped up to help.
While active-duty personnel received pay at the last minute, hundreds of civilian employees and Air Reserve Technicians (ARTs), an integral part of Barksdale's mission, have gone without pay for a month.
Many federal employees across our region are facing similar challenges, and it's heartening to see our community come together to support them.
Many who are still reporting to work are taking second jobs, depleting their savings, struggling to cover basic expenses like gas, childcare, bills and are quietly doing their best to stay afloat.
Our local food bank is running low, and Catholic Charities and other partners are stretched thin.
To help bridge this gap, we are launching a Community Relief Initiative to collect and distribute food, essential supplies, and monetary resources to anyone in need.
We are grateful for the organizations already stepping up to fill this gap through food assistance, gift cards, and other direct support.
Local Partners & Resources the Community Can Support:
Northwest Louisiana Military Support Foundation
- Visit nwlamilitarysupport.org,
a Bossier Chamber subsidiary.
- Funds go directly to those in need, donations are tax deductible.
- FRST - First Responder Support Team, as requested by our friend Eric, we are facilitating donations to support those in need.
- Despite being furloughed himself, Eric, a veteran, has stepped up to assist others during this difficult time.
- Funds will be sent directly to FRST.care, which has already helped over 50 reservists since earlier this week.
- Those seeking assistance can reach out through FRST's online form, requesting help with food, gas, childcare, car expenses, and other essential needs due to missed paychecks.
Catholic Charities of North Louisiana can help anyone, regardless of military status, veteran status, or income.
- They provide rent and utility assistance and have waived the in-person class requirement for financial literacy classes.
Eastwood Baptist Church in Haughton is accepting donations and distributing groceries.
The Simple Church will collect donations for pantry staples, basic necessities, and cleaning supplies.
First Bossier will collect donations for pantry staples in their church office.
We are seeking additional collection sites and help with distribution to expand our reach.
If you are interested in participating, please let us know so we can coordinate efforts efficiently.
Lastly, Contact your representatives to share how these furloughs are affecting families in our community.
Your voice can help ensure continued attention and resources for those impacted.
- Find your legislators at legis.la.gov/legis/findmylegislators.aspx.
This community always comes together to support each other, and I know the folks we help today will pay that kindness forward when they can.
While we're all hoping pay resumes soon, we want to provide a little relief where we can.
Thank you for your compassion, support, and willingness to step up for those who serve us all.
With much gratitude,
Northwest Louisiana Military Support Foundationp
