The COVID variant BA.5 is spreading in San Diego County. When the heat drops and people interact more, seasonal residents return and tourist visit in large numbers, we might have a surge of cases in Borrego Springs.

Infection-induced immunity and vaccine induced immunity apparently do not protect us from infection by BA.5 for long (maybe 4 months). But a recent infection or vaccination still appear to provide some protection from serious illness, hospitalization and death. Getting a booster shot will provide better protection against infection and fairly strong protection against serious illness.

This would be a good time to prepare for a surge. The article from the County explains how we can prevent and treat COVID to reduce serious illness. Masks (N95, KN95 & KF95) and test kits are readily available. This would be a good time to stock up. If you become infected, remember that treatments are now available (described in article) that greatly reduce the likelihood of becoming seriously ill.

Unvaccinated people, frail elderly and people with risk factors are still most likely to become seriously ill. The rest of us could help protect them by practicing prevention.

The continued increase in local coronavirus cases has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to move San Diego County to its high-risk level for COVID-19.

Our Borrego Springs Library received a large shipment of Covid Rapid tests to be given to the community. Each household can receive four kits (8 tests total) per visit. The kits will be distributed on-site at the library while supplies last.

CAL FIRE is Coming Monday with Pfizer Vaccine

Boosters & Other Covid Vaccinations Available
April 18th, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
at Borrego Springs Library

You can make an appointment now on MyTurn for a Pfizer 1st dose*, 2nd dose, 1st booster (if it has been 5 months since the 2nd dose) and 2nd booster (if it has been 4 months since the 1st booster).

Anyone 12 years of age or older is eligible.

Make an appointment by going to https://myturn.ca.gov/

A vaccination will provide good protection against infection and very strong protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death.
If you have been infected and then get one vaccination, protection is also very strong.
Getting a booster before traveling raises your protection level against infection for months.

*CAL FIRE will return in 21 days for anyone who gets a 1st dose that is a resident of Borrego Springs. Anyone who is there now and living somewhere else throughout the year can get their 2nd dose wherever they normally live.

Can’t get to a clinic due to health or transportation needs? We have services for that. Let us know you need help when you register, and we’ll call you to offer support.

During the past three weeks, new cases of Covid19 have decreased to much lower levels than we experienced after the holidays. Cases are expected to remain fairly low through this coming summer.

Approximately one-third of our population remains especially susceptible to becoming infected. As a consequence, the Borrego Springs Covid19 Task Force has decided to remain active through the remainder of this season. Our focus will be to help protect susceptible population groups.

Thereafter, the Task Force will take a sabbatical at least until another surge of Covid19 occurs in Borrego Springs.

We have prepared the attached document (pages 1-4) to inform residents of the Covid19 situation in Borrego Springs and to provide current information for susceptible residents about effective means to prevent severe illness or to seek effective care when exposed or infected.

Sincerely,
Borrego Springs Covid19 Task Force

Note that the County reports PCR tests, which very likely undercount the actual caseload given the growing use of rapid testing not reported to the County.

Nonetheless, the trend in caseload has probably decreased significantly in Borrego Springs. Trends in hospitalization and deaths due to Covid are less influenced by PCR testing. Countywide hospitalizations are down by 2/3 and deaths are down by 1/2 in the latest reporting period by the County. That is also likely true for Borrego Springs.

So, this surge appears to be ending. But, our town is at risk of another surge, perhaps this fall, because we still have many residents who are not fully vaccinated or not boosted.

Recent studies of long-term immunity are finding that being fully vaccinated PLUS BOOSTED may provide almost life-long immunity. This could mean that most of us would not need another shot after the booster to have strong protection against severe illness, hospitalization or death due to Covid-19. Here is a NYT article that summarizes those studies and provides links to the full, published articles.
