🇺🇸 We Will Never Forget 🇺🇸

Today, the members of the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department join our nation in remembering the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years have passed, but the memories, the sacrifices, and the names of those we lost must never fade.

Here in Boothbay Harbor, we understand the deep bonds that connect a community. Our neighbors, families, first responders, and local organizations stand together in times of need. That same spirit of service and unity connects us to the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, military members, and civilians who answered the call on September 11th.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives taken that day. We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and climbed those stairs while thousands of others were trying to get out.

They knew the danger.
They knew the risk.
And still, they went.

As firefighters, those 343 will always hold a special place in our hearts. They represented everything the fire service stands for. Courage, sacrifice, brotherhood, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

But today, we remember more than numbers. We remember fathers and mothers. Sons and daughters. Brothers and sisters. Friends and coworkers. We remember the countless people whose lives were forever changed.

And 25 years later, we also remember what happened the next day.

September 12th, 2001.

America woke up hurting, but America woke up together.

Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers embraced strangers. American flags hung from homes, businesses, fire stations, bridges, and overpasses. For a moment, the things that divided us didn’t seem to matter.

We were simply Americans.

Here in Boothbay Harbor, may we continue to carry that same spirit of compassion, service, and neighbor helping neighbor. Maybe one of the greatest ways we can honor those we lost on September 11th is to remember how we treated one another on September 12th.

From all of us at the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department, we ask you to take a moment today to remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who ran toward danger, and keep their families in your thoughts.

We invite our Boothbay Harbor community to pause, reflect, and remember together. Whether at home, at the fire station, along the harbor, or wherever you may be. Let us stand united in gratitude for those who served, compassion for those who continue to grieve, and hope for the future.

A quarter century after September 11, 2001, the Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) Student Council invites community to a 25th Anniversary Remembrance and Service Assembly on September 11, 2026. Held on Sherman Field at the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor CSD Campus, this ceremony brings together students, staff, community and local first responders to honor the lives lost, pass the enduring legacy of 9/11 to a new generation, and salute our community heroes.

Passing the Torch of Remembrance: More than 100 million Americans are too young to remember 9/11. This assembly fulfills our shared promise to ensure youth born after the tragedy learn its historic significance and lasting legacy.

Honoring Sacrifice: Recognizing the unimaginable losses of September 11 while paying tribute to the daily bravery and dedication of local emergency responders.

Celebrating Unity and Service: Highlighting the courage, compassion, and civic duty that emerged 25 years ago and continue to ripple through our community today.

*Twenty-five years after the September 11, 2001 attacks changed our nation forever, a new generation has grown up without direct memory of that day. To fulfill our shared promise to never forget, the BRHS Student Council is hosting a community-wide assembly on Sherman Field. Joined by local police, fire, and emergency service workers, we gather as a school and town to reflect on unimaginable loss, honor extraordinary bravery, and reinforce the enduring values of unity and service. Family and community members are welcome to join us in remembrance.

All of us at the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department would like to thank everyone who assisted with yesterday’s emergency at the Meadow Mall.

At approximately 3:30 PM, we were dispatched for a reported propane leak behind the building. Upon arrival, crews found five large propane tanks, with one leaking from the service valve.

Firefighter Joe Hall, Police Chief Doug Snyder, and Officer Makenzi Aronson had already begun evacuating people from the Meadow Mall, helping move citizens, employees, and visitors away from the area as crews assessed the situation.

Captain Nick Greenleaf and Lieutenant Jesse Peters, in full PPE, approached the tank to investigate and address what appeared to be a valve that was not completely closed. As they attempted to secure it, the valve failed and separated from the tank, causing propane to rapidly escape and immediately escalating the incident.

Captain Greenleaf’s experience with propane played an important role throughout the response. Nick has extensive hands-on knowledge of propane systems, and once the valve failed, that experience helped our crews quickly understand the seriousness of what we were dealing with, recognize the hazards involved, and determine the safest course of action as conditions changed.

We are extremely fortunate to have that level of knowledge and experience within our department. In an incident involving a large propane release, where conditions can change in seconds, having someone with Nick’s background on scene was an invaluable resource for the entire response.

Crews immediately established a safety perimeter and worked to evacuate citizens, employees, visitors, and emergency personnel from the IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) atmosphere.

Within a reasonable amount of time, we were able to assemble and coordinate a team to move back into the hazard area and control the leak. With a ground monitor flowing water to help control the propane v***rs and protect the team, the water stream also created a Venturi-like effect, helping draw and disperse the propane v***rs away from the work area. Crews made a coordinated approach to the leaking tank. The team successfully plugged the tank and slowed the uncontrolled release.

This was not a simple operation. Every move had to be coordinated and deliberate because of the amount of propane involved and the potential consequences of an ignition.

Propane is extremely dangerous. It is highly flammable, can create an explosive atmosphere, and its v***r is heavier than air, allowing it to collect in low areas and travel away from the source. A single ignition source can turn a propane leak into a catastrophic event. That is why the evacuation, safety perimeter, and coordinated approach were absolutely necessary.

We sincerely thank the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department, Boothbay Harbor Police Department, Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Region Fire Auxiliary, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Lincoln County EMA, Central Maine Power, Maine DEP, and everyone else who assisted.

A special thank you also goes to our families, who understand that when the call comes in, our members drop what they are doing and go.

And finally, thank you to the citizen’s, businesses, employees, and visitors of Boothbay Harbor for your patience and cooperation. We know the evacuation and access restrictions were inconvenient, but your cooperation gave emergency crews the space needed to handle a dangerous situation safely.

What began as a propane leak quickly became a serious and potentially catastrophic incident. We are incredibly thankful for the training, experience, teamwork, and cooperation displayed by everyone involved and, most importantly, that everyone went home safely.

Three years ago, Boothbay Harbor Fire Department began a new tradition. It started as a chicken barbecue fundraiser, and last year morphed into a lobster bake which netted the department over $13,000. 🚗 WE NEED JUNK CARS! 🚗

The Gavin Martin Foundation is putting on an Extrication Training on August 15th, taught by Maineiac Fire Training, and we need your help to make this training a great success!

We’re looking for junk cars that you may want out of your yard. Every vehicle donated provides firefighters with valuable hands-on experience using extrication tools in a safe training environment.

These donated vehicles help our newer members become comfortable cutting cars, learning rescue techniques, and building the confidence they need before responding to a real emergency. The more cars we have to train on, the better prepared we’ll be when someone is trapped and counting on us.

If you have a junk vehicle you’d be willing to donate, please reach out. Your donation could help save a life.

Please note: If the vehicle is 20 years old or newer, we will need the title in hand before we can accept it.
