RISE Caldwell-Watauga helps students reach new heights and pre-apprenticeships for WHS students like recent graduates Rylee and Solomon have made a tremendous impact!

Rylee completed her first pre-apprenticeship in the Spring and has since accepted a Registered Apprenticeship with UNC Health Appalachian. This summer, she has returned to RISE and is pursuing her Medical Office Credential. She plans to begin her studies at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute this fall as she works toward becoming a Registered Nurse.

Solomon completed his first pre-apprenticeship as a Health Support Pre-Apprentice in the Spring. After returning this summer as a CNA Pre-Apprentice, he will begin his studies at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall. He has aspirations to become a CRNA or ICU nurse.

Both Rylee and Solomon were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet Gov. Stein. These students and their families extend their gratitude to Laura Carson and Heather Miller (Watauga High School & Innovation Academy) for their instrumental roles in supporting them and connecting them with CCCTI and UNC Heath.

Here’s an exciting update from Mabel School!
Katie LeGrand, Middle Grades CTE teacher at Mabel and Cove Creek School, recently harvested the garlic at Mabel.

This is the garlic planted by students last fall and she expressed that is the biggest she has ever seen! (Here are some pics to prove it) 📸🧄 🌱

She was sad the students weren’t there to help but wanted to share an update for them to see if they are scrolling in-between summer activities and for the Watauga community to see an update from their school garden.

We are so grateful to everyone who keeps up with WCS here on Facebook and still on "X" (formerly known as Twitter), which our district joined in 2014.

As the way that people prefer to receive their news and updates continues to change year after year, we have decided to "Keep up with the times" and are excited to debut our WCS Instagram this July! We wanted to share our plans, and once our new account is up and running, we will provide another update.
We hope this will be another exciting way for our communities near and far to stay informed about everything happening in our schools.

Thanks for your interactions, shares, and support in 2025-2026! We are excited for all of the things to come in 2026-2027.

Learning and collaboration never stop for our WCS district leaders!
We are grateful for the professional learning opportunity the WCS Leadership team recently had with Franklin Covey Education.

On June 16th, Central Office administrators and school leaders gathered for the first Leadership Retreat of the summer. They participated in an invigorating and interactive session on “The Speed of Trust” with Jakki Jethro and Kaitlin Meyer (Franklin Covey Education). The leadership team will be reading “The Speed of Trust” together this school year.

Everyone gained valuable insight into their own levels of self-trust and the trust they place in others.

On several occasions during the session, Ms. Jethro praised WCS leadership on their ability to dive into discussion as they worked through their participant guides.

The day concluded with her presenting the first-ever “HUM Award” to WCS for being one of the most conversational groups she has worked with recently.

On June 16th, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC will hold a distribution at Blackburn's Chapel, located at 3986 Todd Railroad Grade Rd, Todd, NC.

Please help spread the word!
Distribution will begin at 12:30 p.m. and there will be produce boxes, meet, and eggs available.

What a wonderful experience the STEAM Expo at Appalachian State University is for regional middle/high school students and their teachers! We appreciate all who help make it possible.

Watauga community: Here are the menus for the free summer meals (ages 18 and under) available at Mabel School and Green Valley starting Monday, June 15th.

Breakfast will be from 7:45 a.m. until 8:30 a.m.
Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. - Noon
*All meals must be consumed on-site

Meals will be served at Green Valley June 15th-July 10th (with no meals served on July 3rd)

Meals will be served at Mabel School June 15th- June 30th.

School may be out for the summer, but a lot of our WCS family continues to work hard and serve the community during the warmer months!
Our district will begin Summer Hours on Monday, June 15th, 2026.

The Central Office and all schools will be open to the public Monday–Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Regular hours will resume on Monday, Aug. 10.

The July 4th holiday will be observed on Thursday, July 2.
