We are so very pleased to have our Town of Boone Democratic candidates for Mayor and Town Council speaking to us at our monthly meeting!!

Our first candidate is Dalton George.
Dalton is currently running for the position of Mayor of Boone, North Carolina. He currently serves as Mayor Pro Tem and has been a member of the Town Council for more than four years.

In his professional life, he serves as the National Organizing Director for the Endangered Species Coalition, working to defend wildlife nationwide. He’s passionate about environmental action, fair housing, and creating a town where working-class people can thrive.

Our next candidate is Todd Carter who is running for a position on Boone Town Council.
Todd graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a concentration in Exercise Science and was a letterman in Football Sports Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and everything he has done since bears little resemblance to that life. His careers in the restaurant businesses, health and wellness industry have taken him throughout the US, around the world and now back in his home state where it all began. Todd has served as Chief Development Director for Hospility House of Northwest NC since 2011. He is a lifelong Democrat who first canvassed at 8 years old with his Dad and assisted his precinct vice chair Granny on elections days.
In November 2021, Todd was elected to serve on the Boone Town Council for a term of four years, and is excited and hopeful to be re-elected this November. He is also on the Board of Directors for Ashe County Coalition for the homeless (ACCH), the AppalCART Board of Directors, is the founding 2nd Vice President and past President of the Watauga Board of NAACP, is a founder of the High Country LGBTQ Youth Alliance, founder of Boone Pride and co-founder of the Watauga Back2School Festival. Previously, he served on the Advisory Board and as a supervisor for the NC Carolina Campus AmeriCorps VISTA program, on the Community Advisory Committee for the Appalachian State University Carnegie Foundation Classification ClassiFication,
As a mentor in the Dale Tweety Mentoring Program at the Appalachian State Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship, a session presenter and Peer Collaborator for the Mandela Washington Fellowship and on the Executive Planning Committee for the Stone Soup Nonprofit Leadership Consortium, OUT in the High Country Conference and Watauga Housing Forum.

Our next candidate is Virginia Roseman who is running for a position on Boone Town Council.
Virginia was first appointed to Boone Town Council in 2021 and was re-elected during the November 2021 election season. She has lived in Boone for 24 years and raised her family here. She has no desire to call another town home! Virginia ran for one purpose-to serve! She loves to serve others, and believes that giving back to the community is one of the best things a citizen of any town can do! Virginia has served on many boards in the town! She hopes to see long term projects completed, including adding additional parking, traffic issues, affordable housing and others.

Our next candidate is Adrian Tate.

This is his first time running for Boone Town Council and this is the letter I received from him:

I’ve called Boone home for over two decades, and I’ve spent the last 18 years designing affordable energy-efficient homes, because I believe everyone deserves a comfortable place to live that doesn’t break the bank. My passion for building a better community also led me to serve as the Director of Workforce Development for the High Country region, helping connect job-seekers with meaningful careers from Sparta to Burnsville.

These days, I work as a construction project manager building custom homes and serve as Chair of the Town of Boone Planning Commission. Before that I chaired the Appearance Commission where I focused on developing standards to keep Boone beautiful and welcoming. I earned my Master’s in Building Science from Appalachian State and I will bring that same spirit of sustainability and smart growth to a role on town council.

Outside of work, I’m a proud parent to a recent Watauga High School graduate, and share my home with my wife, our dog, and a very opinionated cat. I’m running because I believe in Boone’s future, and I’m ready to keep building it together.

Democratic Women Leaders speaking out.

07/17/2025

This is from North Carolina Women Forward:

Hi all. As an Etsy seller, I wanted to share some information regarding the continuing calls to boycott Etsy over "Alligator Alcatraz" merchandise. Some info is taken from a much longer post made by Jen Bernardi.

1. Boycotting Etsy is not effective. It is not like boycotting Amazon. Etsy does not have a warehouse full of products it ships out. Whenever you buy on Etsy, you buy from an individual or small business. 86% of Etsy sellers are women. 22% are LGBTQ+. Many shops are owned by POC, disabled people, neurodivergent people, and other minorities. If you boycott Etsy, you directly harm these sellers.

2. Etsy has been actively removing these listings for two-plus weeks. It takes time and has to be done item by item. It is the ONLY platform that we know for a fact is removing these products.

3. Etsy scores 100% Democrat on Goods Unite Us.

4. Etsy scores 100% on the Disability Equality Index.

Boycotting Etsy has the opposite effect of what you intend. In promoting the boycott, you encourage shoppers to visit these MAGA sellers, which in turn raises their profile with the Etsy algorithm, meaning they'll show up more often in searches and get in front of more shoppers. On the other hand, sellers like me (liberal sellers who target liberal shoppers) will be pushed DOWN in the algorithm and shown LESS to shoppers. If you want to help liberal sellers, seek them out on the platform and promote them to your friends.

You can also report items on Etsy. Simply go to the listing you want to report and click "Report this item." On desktop, the link is directly under the main listing image. On mobile, you have to scroll down to the bottom of the listing. Choose "I don't think it meets Etsy's policies," and follow the prompts.

Don’t miss our next meeting!

Date: Wednesday, May 21st.

Place: Coyote Kitchen Restaurant

“Many thanks to Coyote Kitchen”

Time: if you wish to eat lunch you may arrive at 11:00am, the meeting will begin at noon.

Pam Williamson will be our guest speaker at our meeting. The title of her talk is “Now What.” Pam is a long-time political activist, a founder of the “Watauga County Voting Rights Task Force,” and the author of Pam’s Picks. She says we all know it’s a dangerous and scary time in our nation’s political history, and we all know it’s all hands on deck. But how do we start? What do we do? What will they do next? How can we most effectively fight back? How can we win? Pam reminds us that “It almost seems impossible until it is done” (Nelson Mandela) and will share her experiences in winning battles that she was told could not be done and exploring ways to win what appears impossible going forward in this important moment in our state and country.

Please come out and bring a friend.
