⚡ Please conserve energy this afternoon.

Electricity demand is higher than normal across the region today. NRLP is encouraging customers to voluntarily conserve energy through 8 p.m. to help reduce demand.

Small actions — such as adjusting your thermostat a few degrees higher, turning off unnecessary lights, or delaying use of large appliances — can make a big difference.

There is no impact to electric service.

Thank you for doing your part to support regional grid reliability!

This conservation request is associated with a Level 1 Energy Alert issued by Duke Energy.

⚡Update 7:40 p.m.: Normal Conditions Resume

The previous Energy Emergency Alert Level 1 issued by Duke Energy has been lifted.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we all worked to support North Carolina's electric grid. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about Energy Alerts, energy reduction strategies and more. Check out nrlp.appstate.edu.

⚡Energy Emergency Alert Level 1 Issued 3:42 p.m.

Due to high temperatures and increased energy demand across the state, NRLP is participating in an Energy Emergency Alert issued by Duke Energy, the regional grid operator.

There is no impact to electric service.

We are asking customers to voluntarily conserve energy through 8 p.m. this evening. Help reduce demand and support grid reliability during peak usage times with these simple steps:
✅Raise your thermostat a few degrees
✅Turn off unnecessary lights
✅Delay the use of large appliances

We know outages can be disruptive — even if they are short-lived ⚡

With summer here, you might think thunderstorms are the most common cause of outages, but the truth is, growing trees and busy squirrels can be every bit as troublesome as heavy rain and winds.

We've put together a short blog post that explains some of the most common causes of summer outages, how the electrical system is designed to respond and what our team does to make sure we get the power back on.

As always, we are grateful for your patience and support when an outage does occur, and for the hard work of our team who don't stop until the power is back on 💪

What looks like a competition is really a showcase of the skills, training and safety practices lineworkers use every day.

Recently, NRLP apprentice lineworker Finley Hodges represented New River Light and Power at the NCAMES Lineman's Rodeo alongside lineworkers from across North Carolina.

We're proud of the dedication our crews bring to serving the High Country — and we've added more photos from the event to our website.

💛 June is Public Power Month of Giving 💛

Public Power Month of Giving is a national initiative that encourages public power utilities across the country to give back to the communities they serve.

This year, we’re kicking off Month of Giving with a community supply drive benefiting the Watauga Humane Society 🐾

We’re collecting items to help care for local animals while they wait for their forever homes — from food and treats to cleaning supplies and enrichment items. Every donation makes a difference.

There are three easy ways to help:

🐶 Drop off donations at the NRLP office
🐱 Shop directly from the Watauga Humane Society wishlist
❤️ Make a monetary donation online

Together, we can keep tails wagging and continue powering good in the High Country. 💛

We were thrilled to celebrate this year’s NRLP Scholarship recipients and Lineworker Scholarship recipient during a recent awards ceremony honoring outstanding local students 🎉

Supporting education and investing in the next generation is one of the many ways we live out the values of public power and strengthen the community we serve.

We’re so proud of these students — be on the lookout for more details soon!
