224th Ave E / SR 410
Injury Collision / DUI
Officers were dispatched to a report of a two vehicle, rollover collision at the roundabout. A maroon truck had rolled once, while a black truck had damage to the front passenger corner. A yield sign was also damaged. While East Pierce Fire and Rescue was checking on the driver of the maroon truck that rolled, the officer observed several beer cans on the ground near his truck including an open beer can and empty Buzzball container on the front passenger seat. While interviewing the driver of the black truck, he stated he entered the roundabout when the maroon truck was approaching at a high rate of speed, entering the roundabout in the right lane, too fast to negotiate the curve, left the roadway, hitting the sign then swerving back to hit the black truck. The maroon truck then swerved right and rolled at least once. EPF&R advised the driver of the maroon truck would need to be transported for evaluation. When officers contacted the driver of the maroon truck, they observed his eyes were watery, speech slurred and s strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath. Based on observations and circumstances, the driver was then informed he was under arrest and even though he was being transported, he was not free to leave. A blood search warrant was issued and served while at the hospital. After being cleared, the 24-year-old male was booked into jail for DUI.

Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer, Eluding
Officers were parked at Allan Yorke Park when one officer pointed out a vehicle that pulled into the parking lot behind them. The officer advised the vehicle was driving through the area a little fast. The park and waterfront area was heavily populated due to the weather. A check on the vehicle showed the driver to be suspended/revoked 1st degree with ignition interlock required. While running the check, the vehicle left the parking lot. The officer then saw the vehicle coming back toward them and initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot near the Snack Shack. The officer contacted the driver and knew he was providing false information. They asked the driver to exit the vehicle as he was going to be placed under arrest. The driver started the vehicle and shifted into reverse. As the officer was yelling for him to exit the vehicle, the driver turned the front of the vehicle in the officer’s direction. The officer jumped backwards to avoid his legs being struck by the vehicle and his feet crushed between the vehicle and curb. The second officer was pushed by the vehicle as it reversed but was able to get out of the way before being ran over. The driver of the vehicle then rammed the patrol vehicle with the rear of his vehicle causing damage to the patrol vehicle bumper. The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed disregarding the safety to persons or property at the park area as it was still full of people and vehicles. Another officer located the vehicle that fled and initiated a pursuit on SR 410 E heading westbound. As the driver continued to elude and drive recklessly, the pursuit was terminated, as it started to become a danger to the public. Charges were forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for Driving while License suspended/revoked 1st, Reckless Driving, Hit and Run Unattended and Eluding a Police Officer on the 37-year-old male.

🚨 Helping students ride safely: Understanding new state e-ride law 🚲️

As summer begins and more students spend time outdoors, the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District, in partnership with the Sumner Police Department, Bonney Lake Police Department, Pierce County Sheriff's Office, and East Pierce Fire & Rescue, encourages families to learn more about a new state law that clarifies the difference between e-bikes and electric motorcycles.

An e-bike must have working pedals and cannot exceed 20 mph using motor power alone. Higher-powered devices may be classified as electric motorcycles, with additional age, licensing, and operating requirements. E-motorcycles are not allowed on school campuses.

Before your child rides, talk about safe riding habits, traffic laws, where devices can be used, and the importance of wearing a helmet every time.

If you're unsure about the type of e-ride device your child uses, view the E-Ride Guide linked on website at sumnersd.org/eridelaw
