The Holmes County Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) is made up of representatives from several local agencies working together to identify traffic safety concerns and discuss ways to improve roadway safety throughout our area. The team is supported by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which assists with evaluating concerns and implementing potential solutions.

The CTST meets approximately every other month and strongly encourages public participation and feedback. During the most recent meeting on May 14, FDOT provided updates on several local traffic concerns that have been discussed by the team.

🚦 Douglas Ferry Road (280/79)
Bonifay Fire-Rescue has consistently submitted crash data from responses at this intersection to FDOT for review. Based on engineering evaluations and crash trends, FDOT has determined that changes are warranted. Initial improvements will include additional beacons and lighting, with continuous monitoring to determine the success of these changes. We appreciate Washington County Fire Rescue representative Chief Porter joining the discussion and providing valuable insight from the bordering county.

🚦 St. John’s Road / Son-In-Law Road / Highway 79
Bonifay Police Department and Bonifay Fire-Rescue have also provided crash data and response information regarding this intersection. After review, FDOT determined that a traffic signal is warranted. Funding will now be pursued for the project. At this time, a construction timeline has not been established.

Every step toward safer roadways is a step in the right direction. This team is proof that communication and cooperation between agencies is critical to improving safety for everyone in our communities.

We encourage the public to join us at our next CTST meeting on August 6th at 6:00PM at the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners Office. The meeting will also be livestreamed for those wishing to participate virtually.

As always, any CTST questions, concerns, or comments can be sent to [email protected].

*pictured is a motor vehicle crash at Highway 79 and 280. Multiple agencies were on scene with Bonifay Fire-Rescue, including Florida Highway Patrol, Chipley Fire Rescue, Washington County Fire Service, Washington County EMS, and Holmes County EMS. It’s a privilege to serve a place where agency lines fade during emergencies.

❤️‍🔥 Yesterday, Bonifay Fire-Rescue responded to a tree down on Highway 173 South that had also brought down a power line, requiring assistance from West Florida Electric Cooperative.

They could have simply handled the power line issue and moved on to their next call, but they didn’t. Alongside some motorists who were stopped and waiting, they put their gloves on and helped our crews cut up the tree and clear the roadway.

That kind of teamwork says a lot about our community. People stepping up without being asked, working side by side to get the job done safely and quickly.

We’re big fans of teamwork, and yesterday was a perfect example of it. Thank you to WFEC and the passing motorists who went above and beyond to help. We appreciate you all. ❤️‍🔥

🚨 CAUTION 🚨
Highway 173 South, just south of Springhill Rd is closed due to a downed tree and downed power lines. Electricity crews and fire crews are in the area working to safely clear the road. Please find an alternate route if possible.

Around 10:00pm last night, Bonifay Fire-Rescue was notified of a tree down across Highway 90, blocking all lanes of traffic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Fire crews, Bonifay Police Department, and the City of Bonifay’s Public Works Department worked together to quickly remove the tree from the roadway.

Teamwork is essential in times like these. We’re grateful to have great working relationships with our partnering departments.

He’s always willing to assist anyone in need, you can probably find him at the ball field or on the river with his family if he’s not working a shift for us or Walton County, and he keeps us informed better than anyone else. We’re so fortunate to have him on our team.

Help us wish our own Austin Medley a happy birthday today!
