🌱 Learning by Doing in the R&T Garden! 🌱

Our 2026–27 DCHS SR&D students, under the direction of Mr. Melson, have been busy in the DC Research & Teaching (R&T) Garden!

Students have been harvesting pumpkins, okra, sunflowers, cucumbers, southern peas, Choctaw Tribal Flour Corn, Calico Traveler Lima Beans, and more. They aren’t just harvesting—they’re learning how to process and save seeds to plant next year, continuing the crop rotation started by last year’s SR&D students.

This hands-on experience gives students a real look at agricultural production, research, seed saving, and the challenges farmers face. The drought, heat, and recent water restrictions have impacted this year’s crops, providing another valuable lesson in the realities of agriculture.

We are excited to see what these students continue to learn and grow! 🌻🌽

A special THANK YOU to Texas Farm Bureau Gardens for Growing, Fannin County Farm Bureau, Fannin County Soil & Water Conservation District, Region 10 ATPE Classroom Grants Program, and the National Agriculture in the Classroom Classroom Grant Program for supporting this program during the 2025–26 school year.

Our students are truly learning by doing! 🐝
