Just outside the beach crowds is a completely different piece of coastal Alabama.

Swift-Coles Historic Home sits in Bon Secour beneath huge live oaks near the Bon Secour River.

And it feels worlds away from the high-rise coastline.

The house is associated with the Swift family, whose story was tied to the area's lumber and maritime economy. The property remained in the Swift family until 1976, when Gulf Shores restaurateur and antiques dealer Nicholas Coles purchased it. Coles restored the home and filled it with period furnishings and antiques.

Today visitors can tour rooms that provide a completely different picture of life on Alabama's coast.

Because that's something easy to forget.

The history of this area isn't simply hurricanes and beach tourism.

People lived along rivers.

Families worked in fishing, timber and maritime trades.

Communities like Bon Secour existed long before the condominium skyline arrived.

And then there's the other reason people talk about Swift-Coles.

Ghost stories.

Even Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism playfully notes that visitors might encounter a ghost or two while exploring the property.

Whether you believe that part is entirely up to you.

Personally, any giant historic Southern house surrounded by live oaks gets at least a 40% increase in suspicious noises after dark.

We found this rug folded up in a drawer, and I can’t decide if I like it with the love seat that’s here. What do you all think? 
The one that’s folded up now is what was down here before and I liked it better but it was smaller.
