There’s been a lot of discussion in our community about Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, and Sheriff Brian Chism wants Brunswick County residents to understand how, and why, we use it.
ALPR technology is an investigative tool. It does not replace our deputies or good, old-fashioned police work. When used appropriately, it can help investigators locate vehicles, establish timelines, disrupt drug trafficking, recover stolen property and, most importantly, help find people who may be in danger.
In this video, Sheriff Chism shares real examples of how ALPR technology has assisted BCSO investigations, including:
• Taking nearly four ounces of methamphetamine off our streets and making three trafficking arrests
• Helping locate an armed robbery and kidnapping suspect and getting the victim to safety
• Tracking a stolen vehicle connected to a homicide and shooting investigation
The Sheriff also addresses an equally important part of the conversation: constitutional protections, accountability and trust.
Every deputy takes an oath to support and defend the Constitution. We have policies, safeguards and audits in place to ensure this technology is used only for legitimate law enforcement purposes, and when someone misuses that authority, they will be held accountable.
Sometimes the vehicle we’re looking for may lead us to a missing child, an elderly person with a cognitive impairment, or someone else who is vulnerable or in danger. When it’s someone you love, every minute matters.
Our goal remains the same: use the tools available to us responsibly, protect the trust of the people we serve and do everything we can to keep Brunswick County safe.
