Apparently, running for Tuscarawas County Auditor means I’m supposed to make serious campaign posts all the time.

So here goes. 😁

I’m Joe Rinehart.

Marine veteran. Entrepreneur. Retired IT guy. Trail host. Dog chauffeur. Occasional panda enthusiast.

And yes, I’m running for County Auditor.

Why?

Because somebody has to understand the records, the numbers, the technology, and what the Auditor’s office actually does.

And no… the County Auditor does NOT spend all day “auditing your taxes.” 😂

I believe the office should be accurate, transparent, professional, accountable, and ideally contain fewer mysteries than your cable bill.

I also support giving Ohio county auditors the authority to help protect consumers by checking gasoline quality.

My radical position is this:

If you pay for a gallon of gas… you should get a gallon of gas. 😁

My campaign staff remains highly professional.

I recently asked Sundrop the Golden Retriever what the polls were showing.

He stared at me.

I’m counting that as “undecided.” 🐕😂

Some politicians promise to change the world.

I’m running for County Auditor.

So I’ll make a simpler promise:

I’ll do the job.

Accurate records. Fair treatment. Transparency. Consumer protection. Common sense.

And absolutely no plans to invade Canada.

Probably.

This November, I’d appreciate your vote for Tuscarawas County Auditor.

Keep politics out of the Auditor’s office and put competence, transparency, and maybe a little humor in. 🇺🇸😁

Happy Labor Day Weekend, Tuscarawas County! 🇺🇸🛠️

From construction workers, healthcare professionals, teachers, first responders, tradespeople, small-business employees, public servants, transportation workers, and everyone who puts in an honest day’s work — thank you.

Labor Day is also a reminder that strong communities are built by people who show up, work hard, look out for their neighbors, and believe tomorrow can be better than today.

🇺🇸 WHAT DOES THE TUSCARAWAS COUNTY AUDITOR DO?

The County Auditor’s office touches the lives—and pocketbooks—of virtually every Tuscarawas County resident.

The Auditor has important responsibilities involving county finances, real estate and property records, financial reporting, public records, licensing, tax-related programs, and accountability. At its heart, the job is about accuracy, transparency, accountability, and service to the public.

That’s why I’m running for Tuscarawas County Auditor.

I believe taxpayers deserve an Auditor who understands that every dollar matters and that the office belongs to the people—not a political party.

As Auditor, I will work to provide:

✅ Fiscal integrity and careful financial oversight
✅ Accurate and accessible public records
✅ Transparency and accountability
✅ Professional and courteous public service
✅ Fair treatment for every Tuscarawas County resident
✅ A strong local focus on protecting taxpayers and consumers

⛽ I’M ON THE CONSUMER’S SIDE!

I also support Ohio Senate Bill 80, which would expand county authority regarding motor-fuel quality testing, including testing for water, sediment, and octane. Consumers deserve confidence that they are receiving the quality of gasoline they pay for.

Honest. Transparent. Accountable.
Working for YOU. Every Dollar. Every Day.

Flock Safety cameras are being marketed as a crime-fighting tool, but every resident of Tuscarawas County should ask a simple question:

How much privacy are we willing to surrender in exchange for the promise of greater security?

As a Veteran and retired IT Administrator, I've spent decades working with technology. I understand its power—and I also understand how easily technology can be expanded beyond its original purpose. History has shown that government surveillance systems rarely become smaller over time. They usually become larger, more interconnected, and more intrusive.

Flock cameras are not ordinary traffic cameras. They are automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems that capture license plates, vehicle characteristics, the date, time, and location of vehicles traveling on public roads. That information can then be searched and, depending on agency policies and agreements, shared with other law enforcement agencies.

Supporters point out that these systems have helped recover stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, and identify suspects involved in serious crimes. Those are legitimate public safety goals, and no one should dismiss them.

However, those benefits come with significant costs that deserve public debate.

Every vehicle that passes a Flock camera is recorded—not just those connected to criminal investigations. That means the daily movements of law-abiding citizens can become part of a searchable database. Where you worship, attend political meetings, visit a doctor, support a charity, or simply travel around your community may all be documented simply because you drove on a public road.

The issue isn't whether you have "nothing to hide."

The issue is whether government should routinely collect information about innocent people who are not suspected of committing any crime.

Privacy is not something reserved for criminals. It is a constitutional principle that protects everyone.

There are also documented examples showing why oversight matters. News reports have described cases in which individual officers allegedly misused access to Flock systems for unauthorized purposes. Civil liberties organizations have also raised concerns about large-scale data sharing between agencies and the possibility that surveillance tools could be used to monitor constitutionally protected activities. These examples reinforce the need for strong safeguards, transparency, independent audits, and clear limits on how these systems are used.

Technology also changes rapidly. A database that begins as a tool to recover stolen vehicles today could be combined tomorrow with artificial intelligence, facial recognition, predictive analytics, or other technologies that expand government surveillance far beyond its original intent. Once infrastructure is in place, expanding its use is often easier than removing it.

If Tuscarawas County is considering Flock cameras, residents deserve answers before any decision is made:

• What specific problem are these cameras solving?
• How many cameras are proposed?
• Who has access to the data?
• How long is the information retained?
• Which agencies can search it?
• How often are searches audited?
• What penalties exist for misuse?
• Will citizens receive regular transparency reports?
• What independent oversight will exist?
• Can the program be terminated if it fails to meet its goals?

Public safety and individual liberty are not mutually exclusive. We can support law enforcement while also insisting that government surveillance be limited, accountable, transparent, and respectful of constitutional rights.

As Americans, we should never accept the idea that constant government monitoring is simply the price of living in a safe community.

Freedom is not protected by trusting government blindly.

Freedom is protected by holding government accountable.

Should Ohio counties have the authority to test gasoline for water, sediment, and octane to help protect consumers?

I believe Ohio families deserve confidence that the fuel they're paying for meets quality standards. That's why I support Ohio Senate Bill 80, which would authorize county officials to test gasoline for water, sediment, and octane as an added layer of consumer protection.

This isn't about politics—it's about accountability, transparency, and protecting consumers from paying for substandard fuel.

If elected Tuscarawas County Auditor, I'll continue advocating for practical, commonsense policies that put citizens first and safeguard taxpayers.

What do you think? Should Ohio counties have this authority? I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts in the comments.
