It’s time to make THIS SUMMER a memorable one!

Across PA, regional offices are getting ready for their annual Junior Game Warden Camps where youth, ages 12 to 15, can spend the day learning what it’s like to be a Pennsylvania state game warden.

Campers will join wardens in light physical fitness, confidence-building exercises, and hands-on learning stations.

They’ll have the opportunity to go all-in with wildlife forensics, wildlife-capture techniques, woodland tracking, outdoor survival, and all things wild!

There will be six camps hosted across our state, in each of the regions, with varying dates throughout the summer. The Southwest Region's Junior Game Warden Camp will be held at the Southwest Region Headquarters in Bolivar on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

When it comes to wildlife and habitat, collaborations can be beneficial to both parties in meeting strategic objectives, while providing better quality wildlife habitat across the landscape.

A recent project is just wrapping up, that was a major undertaking on State Game Lands 42, near Laurel Ridge State Park and the intersection of Cambria, Somerset, and Westmoreland Counties.

In cooperation with the non-profit Green Forests Work based in Kentucky, the Southwest forestry and land management staff developed a project aimed at planting scrub oak seedlings into a degraded stand within the game lands, where the native species was historically found.

More than 5,000 scrub oak seedlings, supplied by the Game Commission’s Howard Nursery, were planted over an 18-acre stand.

Scrub oaks are a vital Keystone species providing critical food, shelter, and nesting habitat for diverse wildlife species. They produce high-energy acorns, support numerous insects like caterpillars, and offer thick, protective cover for birds, small mammals, and bears.

While it may not look like much now, soon these oaks will stand tall and hopefully provide for generations to come!

Happy Earth Day, Pennsylvania! 🌳

Bears are BACK — and they’re HUNGRY!

Spring is here and bears are waking up from hibernation with one thing on their minds: FOOD. And they’ll go wherever it’s easiest to find it — even your backyard.

The good news? You can prevent unwanted bear encounters by being BearWise and removing attractants before bears find them first.

This spring, take action:
✔️ Lock up trash, recycling, and compost
✔️ Bring in bird feeders when bears are active
✔️ Keep pet food indoors
✔️ Clean and store grills after every use
✔️ Never feed or approach bears

Once bears learn to rely on an artificial food source, it can put both people and bears at risk. Let’s keep wildlife wild and our communities safe by making smart choices today.

Spot a turkey, submit a sighting!

The Game Commission’s wild turkey sighting survey closes Sunday, March 15 — submit your flock sightings in WMU 2A, 2B, and 2D.

Game Commission crews will evaluate these reported sites to determine if the location is suitable for trapping turkeys. Maintaining the scientific practices from the past six winters, male turkeys statewide will be leg-banded and immediately released on site — they will not be relocated.

Winter turkey trapping is a part of the Game Commission’s ongoing efforts to monitor and sustain wild turkey populations. https://bit.ly/4ruzXl1

Thank you for supporting Pennsylvania’s wild turkey conservation!
