"Revising that formula to get the right funding into the right places will help solve problems for high-needs students, our educators, and our educational communities. It will create a flow of money that reflects today’s needs, not 1994’s."

Back to school means back on the road! A quick 36-hour swing through Idaho meant great conversations with educators and legislators, plenty of miles...and even a few deer along the way.

Listening, learning and connecting with the people who make Idaho education happen!

📣Idaho high school students: apply now for Idaho Department of Environmental Quality's AIR-FAIR!📣

AIR-FAIR is a statewide pilot program where high school students become citizen scientists by investigating air quality in their communities and creating projects that analyze local air quality data.

How it works:

➡️Apply as a team — 4–8 students with an adult school advisor

➡️Teams collect and analyze air quality data from existing air quality monitors or apply for PurpleAir sensors to explore research questions

➡️Teams use their air quality findings to complete projects like research, art, videos, data visualizations, and community outreach.

➡️Awards recognize outstanding projects and the teams with the highest overall points.

Submit an application as a team by October 1, 2026! Learn more and apply on the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) website: https://www.deq.idaho.gov/about-us/outreach-and-education/

*MEET THE TEAM SUPPORTING IDAHO EDUCATION*

Jessica Barkley is the high school, college and career counseling coordinator. She is a licensed counselor in the state of Idaho and holds a Bachelor's degree in psychology from Azusa Pacific University as well as a Master's degree in counseling from Sacramento State. Before joining the department, she worked in case management, retail management, and human resources, and, most recently, in higher education for about 8 years as an academic advisor and career counselor. Jessica is also an adjunct faculty member for Boise State University.

In her work for the department, she helps schools navigate Idaho's Advanced Opportunities program, creates resources and training for educators, answers policy and funding questions, and reviews program processes. By partnering with schools and colleges, Jessica can broker meaningful opportunities for Idaho students to earn college credit, gain industry credentials, and prepare for life after high school.

“I have always loved education,” says Jessica, “and all the hats I’ve worn in my career have been about helping others in one way or another.” In grad school, she had the opportunity to work on campus in a variety of positions/offices. That is when she realized that being part of institutions of learning just felt right.
