Our office is closed today in honor of the Juneteenth holiday, also known as "Freedom Day" or "Emancipation Day." This day is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States of America.

On this date in 1865, Union Major-General Gordon Granger issued General Orders, No. 3 enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation which had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln approximately two and a half years before. Granger's order stated in part:

"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a national holiday.
