⚠️ BOATERS: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! 🚤

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is currently monitoring cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in several waterbodies across Idaho.

Cyanobacteria occur naturally in Idaho waters, but under the right conditions they can multiply rapidly and produce toxins that may be harmful to people, pets, and livestock.

If you're heading to the water, keep these safety tips in mind:

🔹 Check current conditions before you launch. Health Watches, Alerts, and Advisories are currently in effect at several Idaho waterbodies.

🔹 When in doubt, stay out. Avoid contact with water that is discolored, has an unusual odor, or looks like foam, scum, mats, spilled paint, or pea soup.

🔹 Keep pets safe. Dogs and other animals can be especially vulnerable because they may drink the water or ingest cyanobacteria while licking their fur.

🔹 Never drink affected water. Boiling water does not remove cyanotoxins and can actually concentrate them.

🚤 What about boating?

Under Idaho DEQ's current guidance, motorized boating can continue at waterbodies under a Health Watch, Health Alert, or Health Advisory. However, boaters should minimize contact with affected water and follow all posted health information.

Conditions can change quickly, so check Idaho DEQ and Idaho Department of Health and Welfare information before heading out.

Safe boating starts before you leave the dock. Know before you go, stay informed, and help keep your crew—and your pets—safe on Idaho's waters.
