May 1 is International Workers’ Day.

It began with workers demanding dignity, safety, and a voice on the job.

From the 8-hour workday strikes of 1856
to the tragedy of Haymarket in 1886 Chicago
to generations of organizing that followed—
May Day has always been about one thing: workers standing together to shape their future.

More than a century later, that fight isn’t over.

Worker power has been challenged.
But something is shifting again.

Today, nearly 7 in 10 Americans support unions.
More people—especially young workers—want a stronger voice on the job.

That momentum matters.

And in Idaho, what happens next isn’t abstract.
It will be decided by voters in the May 19 primary election.

This May Day, we’re not just reflecting—we’re preparing:
✔️ Check your voter registration
✔️ Request your absentee ballot or vote early in-person
✔️Review our voter guide
✔️ Connect with local association leaders and attend a phone bank or door-knocking event
✔️ Help reach other educators to GOTV for the primary election

Because the same principle still holds:

When workers show up together, we don’t just respond to history...

we make it.

HB516 was signed into law today. It is a poorly written, vindictive, cowardly, uninformed piece of garbage. Collaboration and teamwork are now illegal. The Children’s Fund and professional development will hurt our students.
We must stand together to protect our profession and to preserve public education. Our students deserve it.

HB 516 has been signed into law. Read IEA President Layne McInelly’s press release below.

Now what?

In Idaho, many of the decisions that shape our schools are made in the May primary—often by a small number of voters.

That means what happens next is up to us.

This is our moment.
May matters more than ever.
