National Fire News: September 6, 2026. Yesterday, 118 new fires were reported nationwide, including two new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 75 large fires, with 16,502 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

In 2026 so far, there have been 53,165 fires reported nationwide, for a total of more than 8.3 million acres. Firefighters are currently engaged on fires in nine geographic areas.

While many wildfires in the western United States are caused by lightning strikes, human accidents are also a prime culprit. Some people walk away without putting out their campfire, while others light fireworks around dry brush and grass. These behaviors are dangerous and unlawful. You can make a difference and reduce unwanted wildland fires by reporting careless and illegal behavior. If you see something suspicious, call the nearest law enforcement office.

National Fire News: September 5, 2026. Yesterday, 65 new fires were reported nationwide, including six new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 78 large fires, with 17,812 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

So far in 2026, firefighters have responded to 53,030 wildfires that have burned more than 8.3 million acres across the United States.

Late summer and fall are characterized by extremely dry fuels in many parts of the country, and several geographic areas continue to fight fires that present challenges to containment. Even if temperatures are coming down in your area, maintain heightened awareness of any possible sources of ignition. Ensure your vehicle is in good working order and secure any chains or anything that could drag and spark. Taking a Labor Day camping trip? Commit to practicing excellent campfire and/or barbeque safety. Watch for sparks, embers, and wind, and make sure your fire or grill is cool to the touch before you walk away from it.

National Fire News: September 4, 2026. Yesterday, 92 new fires were reported nationwide, including three new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 77 large fires, with 18,401 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

Due to improving fire weather conditions across multiple geographic areas, increased availability of most nationally shared resource types, and a significant decline in resource ordering through the National Interagency Coordination Center, the National Preparedness Level decreased to four (PL 4), effective September 4 at 7:30 a.m. MDT, after 48 consecutive days at national PL 5.

The National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group (NMAC), composed of wildland fire representatives from each agency at NIFC, establishes the national preparedness level. Factors they consider include number of IMTs committed, total number of resources committed, how many large fires are burning, how many geographic areas have activity, and the time of year, plus any unusual circumstances identified by this group of seasoned fire managers. National Fire News: September 2, 2026. Yesterday, 68 new fires were reported nationwide, including five new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 84 large fires, with 20,245 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

National Fire News: September 1, 2026. Yesterday, 140 new fires were reported nationwide, including seven new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 87 large fires, with 21,268 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

As of today, 74 drone incursions have been reported near wildfires this year. The vast majority of these have occurred in Washington (45), followed by California (nine). Drones in the sky present a critical danger to aircraft with people inside; even a very small drone has the potential to damage the tail rotor on a helicopter or incapacitate an engine and cause a fatal accident. Thus, when an unknown drone is spotted near a wildfire, aerial operations are grounded until the skies are clear. That pause may only last a few minutes, but in wildfire response, every minute matters. Protect firefighter safety, ensure they’re able to do their jobs, and avoid a potential costly fine: Know before you fly, and if you're anywhere near wildfire activity, do not fly at all.

National Fire News: August 31, 2026. Yesterday, 108 new fires were reported nationwide, including four new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 93 large fires, with 22,434 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

Yesterday, the Northwest geographic area went down to preparedness level 4 after 44 days at PL5, indicating a modest decrease in overall fire activity in a region that has been having an extremely challenging summer. Nationally, the preparedness level is still 5.

While many wildfires in the western United States are caused by lightning strikes, human accidents are also a prime culprit. National Fire News: August 29, 2026. Yesterday, 100 new fires were reported nationwide, including four new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 92 large fires, with 21,371 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

So far in 2026, firefighters have responded to 51,774 wildfires that have burned more than 8.1 million acres across the United States, 126% of the 10-year average for fires and 165% for acres burned. Fire activity in the Great Basin geographic area is increasing, with heavy initial attack. A new fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for North Central Texas due to drought.

National Fire News: August 28, 2026. Yesterday, 153 new fires were reported nationwide, including 13 new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 97 large fires, with 21,859 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

So far in 2026, firefighters have responded to 51,629 wildfires that have burned more than 7.9 million acres across the United States, 127% of the 10-year average for fires and 163% for acres burned.

Wildland fire response does not pause for holidays or weekends. Firefighters, dispatchers, aviation crews, and support staff remain on duty to respond to new starts and ongoing incidents. Periods of recreation and travel can increase the risk of human-caused fires, making prevention and awareness especially important. Staying fire-safe helps protect firefighters, communities, and the places where people gather to enjoy time outdoors.
