It is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors and is operated under the direction of a Manager.

In observance of Labor Day, South Middleton Township offices, including SMTMA, will be closed Monday, September 7.

Trash & Recycling: Waste Management will not collect on Monday, September 7. All collection services will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Township offices will reopen Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30 AM.

Getting ready to close your pool for the season? Know before you drain!

Pool water should never be discharged into a storm drain, swale, or anywhere it can flow into a stream, lake, or river. Stormwater systems carry water directly to our local waterways, which means anything in your pool water can travel with it.

Why does it matter? Pool water can contain more than just chlorine. Algaecides, salt and other pool chemicals, along with sunscreen, lotions, body oils and dirt, can pollute our waterways and be harmful to aquatic life.

Throughout September, we'll be sharing a new Pool Closing Tip every Tuesday to help residents properly manage pool water while protecting our local streams and waterways.

South Middleton Township is proud to once again serve as a drop-off location for the South Middleton Community Cats!

We’ll be collecting new, unopened, dry & wet cat food as well as cat treats from August 31-September 21 to help South Middleton Community Cats provide food for community cats in our area.

Every donation helps keep local cats fed and cared for. 🐾 Thank you for helping us support the cats in our community! 🐱

We are so grateful for the incredible support from our community! Thanks to your generosity, our Back-to-School Hygiene Drive was a huge success. We received so many donations that will directly benefit our students and families.

COMPOSTING 101: WEEK 4, Choosing a Compost Bin!

Choosing the right bin/ container is important for your compost. Do you want an open bin or an enclosed container? How big should the container be? Do you have to buy an expensive container?

This is all up to you and to help you make the right decision I have added information for each type.

Open bins are typically constructed from wood, chicken wire, or recycled plastic. Open bins can easily collect rain water and they make it convenient for adding materials. There are some disadvantages with open bins as they can attract rodents, flies, bees, and bears. They can become too wet if not covered and they could become too hard to mix.

Closed containers are usually an upright box like container or a rotating drum. These containers will rarely attract pests. The rotating drum option is easier to mix and unload. The drum can also have screening options. Some disadvantages are they require you to add water and the upright containers can be difficult to mix.

A helpful tip is, no matter what you choose for your compost make sure you have two sections or containers so that one can continue to decompose while you keep adding to the other. It takes a few weeks to get ready to use compost and the clock resets every time you add new items to the pile.

* Statement on Incident at Carlisle Airport *

South Middleton Township is the owner and operator of the Carlisle Airport. On August 19, there was an incident at the airport involving a Cessna 150 and a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter. While the particulars of the crash are still being investigated, the results are not. It resulted in the unfortunate and tragic death of the pilot of the plane, Dr. Paul Sokoloski, who was a valued tenant of Carlisle Airport. The accident also resulted in the injury of two members of the Pennsylvania State Police’s Aviation Unit. Carlisle Airport wishes to express our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Sokoloski. We are grateful to hear that the two troopers are recovering from their injuries.

Carlisle Airport also wishes to express our sincerest appreciation to the efforts of numerous agencies and individuals from the municipal, County, State, and Federal levels over the past 48 hours. We especially wish to recognize the work of Penn State’s LifeLion medivac unit. We are truly fortunate that LifeLion chooses to call Carlisle Airport home.

Finally, we would like to thank the members of our legislative and congressional delegations, as well as Cumberland County and Carlisle Borough officials, for their offers of support.

As of this morning, Carlisle Airport is reopened. We remain fully committed to ensuring that Carlisle Airport remains a vital regional asset, as it has been for the past six decades.

COMPOSTING 101: WEEK 3 Is Your Compost Ready?

You’ve built it, layered it, and let it cook… now how do you know when your compost is actually ready to use? This week, we’re talking about testing compost maturity and all the ways you can put finished compost to work around your home! ♻️

Not sure if your compost is finished? Try this simple plastic bag test:
Take a handful of compost from the interior of your pile and lightly moisten it.
Place it in a plastic bag and seal it.
Leave the bag sealed at room temperature for 5–7 days.
Open the bag and give it a smell!

✅ Ready compost should have a pleasant, earthy smell.
❌ If it smells rotten, foul, or like ammonia, it needs more time to finish breaking down.

Once your compost is ready, there are plenty of ways to put it to work!
Build Better Soil: Add compost to garden beds in the spring and fall to improve your soil.
Feed Your Garden: Apply compost a few weeks before planting and allow it to naturally work into the soil. It can simply be spread over the surface rather than deeply mixed in.
Feed Your Lawn: Sift finished compost to collect the finer particles and lightly apply them to your lawn throughout the growing season.
Compost + Mulch: Use compost to help nourish your plants, then top it with shredded leaves or grass clippings to help suppress w**ds and retain moisture.
Potting & Seed-Starting Mixes: Finished compost can be incorporated into homemade potting or seed-starting mixes. When using homemade compost for seedlings, proper preparation is important to reduce the risk of pathogens, pests, or w**d seeds.
Compost Water: Soaking finished compost in water can create a nutrient-containing liquid that can be used to water plants. Keep in mind that homemade compost extracts are different from commercially produced “compost tea” and are best used on ornamental plants rather than edible plant parts.

SMT Parks & Rec. has a full evening of summer fun planned this Friday, August 21 at South Middleton Park!

Kick off the evening with an acoustic set from Vertigo Vultures, featuring a familiar face behind the microphone! You may know Kyle Schnitzer as South Middleton Township’s Building Inspector/Zoning Officer/Codes Officer…but this Friday, you’ll find him on lead vocals! 🎤

The Boiling Springs Lions Club will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages & fries, and the Boiling Springs Bubblers Cheerleading squad will have nachos, popcorn, pretzels, candy & drinks plus Bubbler Spirit Gear!

As the sun goes down, grab your chair or blanket and settle in for HOPPERS, beginning at dusk!

Sounds like a pretty great Friday night in South Middleton!

Terri Drive is currently CLOSED at the intersection of S. Spring Garden Street due to a communication line that is down across the roadway.

⚠️ Please do not attempt to drive around or over the downed line. Motorists should avoid the area and use an alternate route until the line can be safely removed and the roadway reopened.

Brightspeed has been notified and the we will provide an update when the roadway has reopened.
