Suffolk AME

Suffolk AME Day in and day out, Suffolk AME members provide the essential services that our County depends on.

Our Forensic Scientists are vital to Suffolk County’s criminal justice and public safety systems, applying specialized expertise that directly impacts investigations and community trust. Eric Sorrentino, a Forensic Scientist III in the Medical Examiner’s Unit, spoke last week at the Suffolk County Legislature Public Safety Committee Meeting, voicing concerns strongly shared across our entire workforce. Ensuring fair salaries is essential to maintaining the high-quality service our community depends on.

“Most Forensic Scientists hold degrees in either Chemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, or other related scientific disciplines. In addition to that, many members have advanced degrees in those same disciplines. In addition to the formal education, new Scientists undergo years of specialized training before they are qualified to independently analyze and interpret evidence. We are also required to maintain competency and proficiency through continuing education, proficiency testing, and strict accreditation standards. Despite these demands and responsibilities, compensation for the Scientists has not kept pace with the technical nature of the work, professional colleagues in neighboring counties, or other comparable scientific professions.

Low salaries make it increasingly difficult to recruit and maintain qualified Scientists. Talented individuals with strong backgrounds often pursue opportunities in private industries or other agencies that offer significantly better compensation. This creates a long-term concern. When Scientists leave, agencies lose years of knowledge and training investment, and remaining staff are asked to carry a heavier caseload, increasing stress, burnout, and the risk of more turnover. Hiring replacements takes a longer time, and with the lower salary is hard.”

“With so many upcoming retirements, the County should be doing everything they can to attract and keep the younger generations who want to step in and continue this work. Instead, County jobs have become a drawback, something many people avoid because they simply cannot afford it. My salary is so low that I am forced to work three jobs just to afford my mortgage. I never imagined that after earning my degree, passing a licensing exam, and dedicating myself to public service and committing to helping vulnerable children and families, I would still be struggling so much to stay afloat.

I worry constantly about whether I can afford to start a family one day. I worry about long-term stability, and I worry that I won’t be able to remain in the career I love because the financial burden is simply too heavy.”

Jillian Weiner of the Health Services Unit joined us at Suffolk AME HQ to speak out about her experience as a Psychiatric Social Worker for Suffolk County. Her words echo those of so many of her fellow Suffolk AME members- our members want to continue their work. Our members love to serve our community. Our members need more if they are going to be able to continue their essential work.

Suffolk AME is proud to represent the dedicated men and women of Suffolk County’s municipal workforce, and we will continue to advocate for increased salaries to not only attract new talent to our ranks but to keep the incredible workers we have serving our friends, neighbors, and loved ones today.

It is with heavy hearts that we join the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County Superior Officers Association in mourning the passing of Lieutenant Richard Grice. Lieutenant Grice’s dedication and service in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Professional Development Section earned him the well-deserved respect of his colleagues, and his loss is deeply felt throughout the department and the community.

We keep Lieutenant Grice’s family, friends, and colleagues in our thoughts and prayers during this profoundly difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in the memories and legacy he leaves behind.

Our dedicated Public Health Educators in the Suffolk County Department of Health Services frequently attend community wellness events to share valuable information about health initiatives and available SCDHS resources.

We extend our sincere thanks to these Suffolk AME brothers and sisters for their commitment to connecting with our community and promoting health and wellness.

Their presence at these events is crucial; it helps raise awareness, provides support to those in need, and empowers individuals to make informed health decisions. Together, we're building a healthier Suffolk County!

Punam Oza, a Chemist II (Public Health), in the Health Services Unit, spoke out at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature earlier this month. With beach season upon us, it is the perfect time to consider how the work done by Punam and her colleagues at the Public and Environmental Health Lab helps to keep our community safe. If we are unable to attract and maintain quality talent in these roles, we will not be able to test our drinking water, we will not know if our beaches are safe for swimming, and both our residents and tourists will suffer. The work done by these members, and ALL Suffolk AME members, is essential to Suffolk County.

“In March of 2026, at 35 years old, I had a pregnancy scare. The only scary part was the immediate thought of oh no, I don’t have enough PTO accrued, how will I be able to stay home without pay? How will there be anything left over this time after we pay the mortgage from savings? While trying to answer these questions, justifying staying with the County became harder and harder. What I saw as a great opportunity four years ago has become a second thought.

…As someone who had complications with their pregnancy that required weekly visits and sonograms, the Prenatal Leave Act would have allowed me to attend those appointments without having to work extra hours while pregnant, just so I didn't use any of the extra hours I was saving to stay home and nourish my son. Currently, as a Chemist II with 10 years of experience, I am making, on average, about $15,000 less than a Chemist II would be making in a private lab. That would cover almost a year of daycare and help us renovate the bathroom so it doesn’t leak in the kitchen anymore, and would help us provide a life for our son where the bare minimum isn’t the norm.”

Suffolk AME extends our heartfelt gratitude to Assemblyman Kwani B. O'Pharrow for his unwavering support of our members. As we continue our contract negotiations, the backing of elected officials, members, and the wider community is crucial. Together, we form one loud, unified voice that cannot be ignored.

In solidarity, we stand strong!
