Our Forensic Scientists are vital to Suffolk County’s criminal justice and public safety systems, applying specialized expertise that directly impacts investigations and community trust. Eric Sorrentino, a Forensic Scientist III in the Medical Examiner’s Unit, spoke last week at the Suffolk County Legislature Public Safety Committee Meeting, voicing concerns strongly shared across our entire workforce. Ensuring fair salaries is essential to maintaining the high-quality service our community depends on.
“Most Forensic Scientists hold degrees in either Chemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, or other related scientific disciplines. In addition to that, many members have advanced degrees in those same disciplines. In addition to the formal education, new Scientists undergo years of specialized training before they are qualified to independently analyze and interpret evidence. We are also required to maintain competency and proficiency through continuing education, proficiency testing, and strict accreditation standards. Despite these demands and responsibilities, compensation for the Scientists has not kept pace with the technical nature of the work, professional colleagues in neighboring counties, or other comparable scientific professions.
Low salaries make it increasingly difficult to recruit and maintain qualified Scientists. Talented individuals with strong backgrounds often pursue opportunities in private industries or other agencies that offer significantly better compensation. This creates a long-term concern. When Scientists leave, agencies lose years of knowledge and training investment, and remaining staff are asked to carry a heavier caseload, increasing stress, burnout, and the risk of more turnover. Hiring replacements takes a longer time, and with the lower salary is hard.”
