ARREST MADE | WANTED SUBJECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER LENGTHY EXTRACTION

On Monday, May 18, 2026, at approximately 2:25 p.m., officers with the Bogalusa Police Department located Devon R. Cotton, 36, of Bogalusa at an abandoned and condemned residence in the 1700 block of Bund Street. Officers were aware Cotton had multiple outstanding misdemeanor and felony warrants and responded to take him into custody.

As officers approached, Cotton attempted to flee and crawled through a hole in the floor of the residence, hiding underneath the structure in an effort to avoid arrest.

Despite repeated commands to surrender, Cotton refused to exit and continued moving around beneath the residence while officers maintained a perimeter and attempted to peacefully resolve the situation.

During the incident, officers recovered two plastic bags containing a white crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine along Cotton’s path of travel beneath the house.

After approximately three hours, officers were able to safely position Cotton near the edge of the residence. Cotton advised officers he was stuck due to mud and structural debris beneath the house. Working alongside the Bogalusa Fire Department, responders removed dirt and debris to create a safe path, allowing officers to successfully extract Cotton without injury.

Cotton was transported to the Bogalusa City Jail and charged with:

• Two counts – Fugitive from Outside Agency
• Possession of Methamphetamine (LRS 40:967)
• Resisting an Officer (LRS 14:108)

Officers also confirmed Cotton had active warrants through Probation and Parole and the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The Bogalusa Police Department would like to thank the Bogalusa Fire Department for their assistance in safely bringing this incident to a successful conclusion.

Driver Injured, Passenger Killed in Crash While Fleeing From Officers

Bogalusa – On April 27, 2026, at 9:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L were requested by the Bogalusa Police Department to investigate a single-vehicle crash on West 9th Street and Avenue G in Washington Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 16-year-old Destiny M. Matran of Bogalusa.

The preliminary investigation revealed that officers with the Bogalusa Police Department attempted to stop a 2004 Nissan 350Z for a traffic violation. The driver of the Nissan refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued. While fleeing from officers, the Nissan exited the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The driver, who was unrestrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Matran, who was also unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene. This crash remains under investigation, and Troopers will forward their findings to the 22nd Judicial District Court District Attorney’s Office for consultation regarding potential charges.

Fleeing from law enforcement puts lives at risk and often leads to tragic consequences. Troopers urge all motorists to comply with lawful orders and stop when directed by police. Making the decision to flee can turn a traffic stop into a life-threatening situation for everyone involved. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Troopers urge all drivers to make smart choices every time they get behind the wheel.
