Statement from Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong on the Passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson

Today, we pause with heavy hearts to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson—pastor, prophet, freedom fighter, and faithful servant in the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America.

Rev. Jackson’s footsteps are forever woven into the sacred history of Bogalusa. At the direction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he came to our city to engage in meaningful dialogue with the Deacons for Defense, helping to bridge courage, faith, and strategy during one of the most defining chapters of the Civil Rights Movement. That moment was not only historic—it was transformative. It helped shape the pathway that allows leaders like me to serve today.

Simply put, there is no Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong without the sacrifice, vision, and relentless advocacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson. His life’s work expanded the doors of opportunity for generations who followed.

We give thanks for his voice, his faith, and his unwavering commitment to the least, the lost, and the left behind. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived—a servant who has now gone from labor to reward.

On behalf of the City of Bogalusa, we extend our deepest prayers and condolences to the Jackson family and to all who were touched by his extraordinary life. May we honor him not only in words, but in the continued pursuit of justice, unity, and love for our neighbor.

Rest well, Rev. Jackson. Your work continues through us.

On this Thanksgiving Day, my heart is full of gratitude for the people of Bogalusa. 🧡

Today, we pause to give thanks for our families, our friends, and for this community we call home. Bogalusa is not perfect, but it is powerful — because of the everyday people who love this city enough to keep showing up, helping neighbors, and believing in a better tomorrow.

I am especially thankful for:
• Our first responders, healthcare workers, and public safety teams who sacrifice time with their families to keep us safe.
• Our City employees who work behind the scenes to keep our streets, utilities, and services running.
• Our pastors, educators, community leaders, business owners, and volunteers who pour into our youth and our seniors.
• Every resident who continues to pray for, support, and push our city forward.

Holidays can also be a difficult time for those who have lost loved ones, are separated from family, or are struggling. Please keep them in your thoughts and reach out to someone who may need a little extra love today.

From my family to yours, I wish you a safe, peaceful, and joyful Thanksgiving. May today remind us how far we’ve come and how much we can accomplish when we stand together as one Bogalusa.

Happy Thanksgiving, Bogalusa! 🦃🍁

There will be no Christmas in the Park this year, per Fiscal Administrator Robert Nielson. He has “temporarily suspended” the appointed Commission to be able to spend the funds. The same city vendors are in line to receive contracts out of the commission’s funds. People who cashed city checks for $19,000 are directly overseeing the process. As far as the City is concerned, there is no display to see this year. The most wonderful time of the year has been made political for no reason.

“This action is indicative of Mr. Nielsen’s tenure—smoke and mirrors. The commission does have a quorum and is not required to meet. This is a way for them to spend the commission’s money with no oversight.” -Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK COMMISSION PRESIDENT

“Pay attention to those who justify poor behavior. The City of Bogalusa has a standing tradition of Christmas in the Park, featuring lights in Cassidy Park. This event has always relied on community members who volunteer for an array of displays and dedicate their time to supporting the logistics behind the event. In recent years, serving on the Christmas in the Park Commission has become one of the many controversies of small-town politics.

Bogalusa has another community-sponsored holiday event, Christmas on Austin Street. In my opinion, it is simply another opportunity for community members to enjoy the festivities with lights and activities. I genuinely look forward to December 13, 2025, when Bogalusa will offer both events. Many of you attend both, and that is what Bogalusa should be about. I have great respect for the Arata family, and they have always been willing to support me in creating a successful park experience. Now, if several of my colleagues and I were to gain access to materials designated for that event, recruit other individuals to help us undermine their plans and desires, and then celebrate our actions by thanking ourselves on social media, that would be a poor reflection on my humanity.

I come from the school of the chain of command. Regardless of whether I believe in the mission, if it is my job to carry it out, I will respect the people charged with making those decisions and do my job to the best of my abilities.

Witnessing factions of people on Facebook trying to justify insubordination, acts that they would not tolerate, is a sad thing on the Sabbath. No one on the commission is ungrateful for the people of Bogalusa for their help. It's hurtful that you didn't HELP US because you didn't even consult us on what help we needed. Ask yourself why no one on the commission was aware of this? We have no idea what you have done
or commitments you have made. You made it clear you have no respect for your fellow citizens in creating joy, cheer, and bringing families together.

I'm always a person who believes we can overcome adversity in the pursuit of our mission. I ask you, as a leader, to allow me to assign you a mission, and you work with me to the best of your ability, not succumbing to sabotage. A few of you have expressed your continued desire to help, and that should be funneled through the Christmas in the Park Commission. Solicitation for services that DO NOT include my signature is unauthorized by bad actors. As I said, I am in contact with the Mayor who appointed us and will follow up with the City Council.

Please share this within your networks, as I have more information forthcoming on how we can proceed to work together on a jolly good time.”
