Sailors Help Band Owlets

Sailors assigned to Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility (NWSTF ) Boardman recently participated in a Community Relations (COMRELP) project with officials from the Oregon Military Department and Army Guard Installations Environmental Division at Camp Rees in Hermiston, Oregon on July 25, 2024.

The COMREL project involved banding Burrowing Owl owlets. Burrowing owls in the Pacific Northwest are currently considered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to be a "Bird of Conservation Concern."

Bird banding provide useful data in scientific research and management, and conservation projects. Individual identification of birds makes possible studies of dispersal and migration, behavior and social structure, lifespan and survival rate, reproductive success and population growth. This COMREL gave the NWSTF staff the opportunity help a threatened species while building interagency relationships.

Sailors Conduct Flag Retirement Ceremony

Sailors assigned to the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facilities at Boardman Oregon recently conducted an official Flag Retirement ceremony, which is done with the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag.

Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, contains rules for handling and displaying the U.S. Flag. Rules on how to properly fly the flag were established in June 1923, when the National Flag Conference met in Washington. When a U.S. flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
