Today (7/27/2026) Bluffton’s new storm siren was installed, tested, and officially placed into service. This Federal Signal unit provides reliable coverage for our community and is built to deliver clear warning during severe weather.

The siren is activated remotely by Otter Tail County Dispatch via radio. Bluffton Fire & Rescue continues to assist with storm spotting in our area, and when conditions call for it, we can request dispatch to activate the siren.

Earlier this year, local donations allowed us to equip our firefighters with brand‑new portable radios, strengthening communication during storms and emergency responses.

The City of Bluffton appreciates the assistance from Todd‑Wadena Electric Cooperative in providing and setting the pole used for the project. Installation of the siren itself was completed through Midstate Wireless as part of the overall system setup.

Bluffton’s storm siren will sound during the statewide test held the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM.

Tue 6/23 -12pm Update: Isolated to scattered severe storms are forecast this afternoon, including the potential for large hail and tornadoes. There have been a few updates from this morning's severe potential forecast. Thunderstorms are now expected to develop a bit earlier than previously forecast - now early afternoon. The potential for larger hail (now up to golf ball sized) has increased, along with a small increase in the chance for tornadoes, particularly within portions of northwest to west-central Minnesota. While not widespread, couldn't rule out isolated instances of gusty winds to 60 mph.
