The Mad River Wiyot, also known as the Batawat, have lived in active floodplains within one of the State's most seismically active watersheds for many thousands of years and have naturally been engaged in some form of natural hazard mitigation planning. The ancestral Wiyot may simply have thought to address risk assessment and hazard planning as exercising "common sense" while modern day Wiyot ope

rate within a much more complex regulatory environment. In either case the ancestral or modern case, the primary goal of natural hazard mitigation planning has probably not changed substantially; to reduce or eliminate the loss of life and property damage resulting from natural disasters.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for portions of Trinity, Humboldt, and Del Norte Counties for isolated dry thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. New fire starts are possible and may spread quickly with gusty and erratic outflow winds. Outside these areas, fire danger remains high for much of the interior as conditions are forecast to be hot, dry, and breezy.

Out of the browns, and back into the blues! Welcome aboard, Kevin! We hope you enjoyed your two days of retirement!

Congratulations Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe Police Chief Kevin Miller on your official swearing in! Our partnerships with local tribal police departments is critical to ensuring all crime in Humboldt County is addressed and all residents have a safer place to live. Our office has a deputization agreement in place with our local tribes, allowing tribal officers who undergo HCSO's field training program to become deputized in order to enforce state law on tribal land.

Lt. Miller is a graduate of our National Emergency Management Advanced Academy 2018-2019 cohort. Congratulations, Kevin!

Weโ€™d like to take a moment to congratulate our very own HCSO Lieutenant Kevin Miller on his graduation from the FBI National Academy!

Participation in the National Academy is by invitation only through a nomination process and is only offered to a select amount of law enforcement managers throughout the U.S. and Internationally. Lt. Millerโ€™s selection and participation is a huge honor and will bring incredible value to the HCSO.

In addition to receiving important training on a variety of law enforcement topics, participants also have the opportunity to share ideas, techniques, and experiences with each other and create lifelong partnerships. The partnerships formed during this experience transcend state and national borders and have proven to enable better multi-jurisdiction coordination to solve crimes and apprehend criminals.

You can learn more about the Academy at: https://www.fbi.gov/services/training-academy/national-academy

Today we welcomed two new tribal officers who will undergo our Field Training Program in order to be cross-deputized with the HCSO! Yurok Tribal Officer Gibson and Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Officer Flores were sworn into their positions today and will be training with HCSO deputies throughout the county for the next few months before heading to serve at their home agencies. Cross-deputization agreements with our local tribes allows the tribes to provide more coverage to their communities and gives the Sheriffโ€™s Office an additional resource for mutual aid.
