**Western Avenue Bridge Repairs Begin June 22**

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that repairs to the bridge that carries Western Avenue over the Cal Sag Channel in Blue Island will begin, weather permitting, Monday, June 22. ​

To complete the work, lane closures will be required on Western Avenue over the bridge, starting on the southbound side. At least one lane in each direction will remain open. Deck repairs on both sides of the bridge are expected to be completed before the Fourth of July. ​ ​ ​

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT: PREPARE NOW FOR POSSIBLE SEVERE WEATHER ⚠️

The Blue Island area is expected to experience severe weather beginning Wednesday morning, with the potential for damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and localized power outages.

Residents are encouraged to take a few simple steps today to prepare:

• Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, decorations, and other loose items.
• Charge cell phones, battery packs, and other essential devices.
• Fuel generators and ensure they are operated safely outdoors and away from structures.
• Have flashlights, batteries, and emergency supplies readily available.
• If you rely on oxygen concentrators, medical devices, or refrigerated medications, make contingency plans now and ensure extra supplies are available if possible.
• Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone who may need assistance.
• Avoid parking vehicles under large trees whenever possible.

During severe weather, stay indoors and monitor trusted weather sources for updates. Never drive through flooded roadways, and report downed power lines to ComEd immediately. Assume all downed wires are energized and stay well away from them.

City officials will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as information becomes available. Please take a few moments now to prepare and stay weather aware.

Storm Recovery Update – Power Restoration Expected Today by 6 pm

Good morning, Blue Island.

Below is the latest update regarding power restoration efforts following the June 10 storm.

According to ComEd, crews continue to work around the clock to restore service to all affected customers. Current estimates indicate that all storm-related outages are expected to be restored by 6:00 PM today.

• Customers in Town: 9,939
• Customers Restored: 5,701
• Customers Still Without Power: 1,278
• Restoration Progress: 81.7% Complete
• Open Outages Remaining: 54

ComEd and mutual assistance crews remain actively deployed throughout the area and will continue restoration efforts until all customers have service restored.

City Hall will be closed today as we navigate through power outages. Emergency services in the city are fully operating.

ComEd crews continue to work to address the mass outages caused by storms over the past two days. Restoration times vary by location and level of damage. As of now, they estimate full power restoration in the City by tomorrow evening. Please plan accordingly and check on family and neighbors in need.

ComEd crews continue working throughout Blue Island to restore power following today's outages. We appreciate everyone's patience as repairs are completed.

Residents who remain without power are encouraged to take advantage of the City's available cooling centers:

Residents may also visit these locations to charge cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.

Please continue to use caution around downed power lines and report outages directly to ComEd. Additional updates will be shared as they become available.

The City is in frequent communication with ComEd as they work on restoring approximately 3,400 outages in town. At this time ComEd has not provided an estimated restoration time. We will provide updates to the public as we receive them.

If your power is out, remember to stay safe:

• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. • Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk. • Never operate generators indoors or in enclosed spaces. • Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges when service is restored. • Treat all downed power lines as energized and stay far away. • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may need assistance.

If your home or property has been damaged in the storm today, please take pictures, before a tree is removed or cut down if you can. Having photos of damage will help the City as we pursue disaster relief funds in the near future.
