โ€œOur fire company takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and remains committed to maintaining the trust, integrity, and professionalism expected by our members and the community we serve. At this time, certain members have been the subject of accusations involving alleged conduct outside of the organization. We encourage all parties to allow the appropriate process to take place and ask that conclusions not be made based on rumors or unverified information. The fire company will continue to uphold its standards of conduct while supporting fairness, due process, and respect for everyone involved.โ€

For today's Meet the Members segment and as part of EMS week, we sat down with EMS 1st Lieutenant Christopher Beasley to learn more about his journey into the fire and EMS service, what keeps him motivated, and the people who helped shape him into the provider he is today.

Lieutenant Beasley has been a member of the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company for nine years, but says the fire service has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. With both of his parents involved in fire and EMS โ€” and his dad also working at Wallops and Accomack County โ€” he jokes that heโ€™s โ€œbeen around the fire service since I was a baby Beas.โ€ Growing up surrounded by emergency services made joining the department feel natural, and eventually led him to where he is today.

Outside of volunteering, Beasley works as a Fire Medic for the Accomack County Department of Public Safety. When asked what the best part of the job is, his answer was simple: being there for people during some of the hardest moments of their lives. He shared that when most people dial 911, theyโ€™re experiencing one of their worst days, and being able to show up and help during that moment makes him feel like heโ€™s truly doing good in the world. He also emphasized how important the bond between coworkers becomes in this profession. Spending nearly a third of the year with your crew creates a second family, and he says heโ€™s lucky to work alongside โ€œthree of the most outgoing people in the worldโ€ who make the job even more enjoyable.

When asked who inspired him to pursue EMS and fire service, Beasley immediately credited his father, Coley Beasley. Watching his dad work professionally while also volunteering his time inspired him from a young age. He recalls watching him drive the engine and seeing old pictures of him pumping trucks, moments that still remind him why he chose this path. โ€œI try to make him proud every day I do this job,โ€ he shared. He also told a story about when he was 16 years old and his father had been dealing with serious heart issues. After telling his dad he wanted to join the fire department, his father put his arm around him and told him he wanted him to join Bloxom specifically โ€œto be under Sean Bagwellโ€™s wing.โ€ Hearing that from his dad made the decision easy. Since losing his father in 2020, Beasley says Sean has continued to be a father figure in his life, something he remains deeply grateful for.

Over the years, Beasley has earned certifications as an EMT and firefighter, along with rope rescue certifications, vehicle extrication certifications, and technical rescue awareness training. For those just starting out in EMS, he believes the most valuable skill anyone can learn early in their career is simply listening to experienced providers. He says heโ€™s learned countless lessons from people like Cole Bonniwell, Mike Rydberg, and Mike Bagwell, and encourages new providers to trust the people around them, stay confident, and never doubt themselves.

When heโ€™s not working or volunteering, Beasley enjoys spending time with his niece, who he proudly calls โ€œmy eyeballs, as they say.โ€ He also enjoys hanging out with friends, and if heโ€™s not at Bloxom, thereโ€™s a good chance youโ€™ll find him on the softball field.
As for what heโ€™d be doing if he wasnโ€™t in EMS or fire service, he laughed and admitted he honestly has no idea โ€” maybe sitting behind a desk somewhere, or possibly working as a physical trainer.
To anyone considering joining the EMS or fire service, whether career or volunteer, his advice is straightforward: โ€œJust try it out.โ€ He believes many people may discover a passion they never expected and could become the next great provider for the county. Most importantly, he says to always give it your all and remember that giving 100% never goes unnoticed.

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Christopher Beasley for stepping into the role of EMS 1st Lieutenant and for his many years of dedicated service to the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company. Christopherโ€™s commitment to this department goes far beyond emergency response. His hard work, leadership, and involvement play a vital role in many of the events that help keep our department going year after year. From our Annual Music Fest to Nightmare Acres, his efforts behind the scenes are truly crucial to the success of this department. We are incredibly grateful for everything he continues to do for Bloxom and the community we proudly serve.

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in communities across our nation. EMS Week recognizes the dedication of those who provide lifesaving care on the frontlines every single day. Presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in partnership with the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), this week serves as a time to honor the men and women who safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of our communities.

Today, we are proud to recognize our EMS Captain, Mike Bagwell.

Mike has been a dedicated member of the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company for 34 years, joining in 1992 at just 16 years old. Throughout his years of service, he has held several leadership roles within the department, including Deputy Chief, EMS 1st Lieutenant, and EMS Captain.

Mike currently serves as a Paramedic with Northampton County EMS, where he has worked for the past year after previously serving there for 8 years as a Captain. Prior to returning to Northampton County EMS, he spent 3 years with Virginia Beach EMS, finishing his time there as a Field Supervisor. He also proudly served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps.

When heโ€™s not serving the community, Mike enjoys duck hunting, spending time with family, and apparently making jokes that are just concerning enough to make everyone pause for a second before laughing. If you know Mike, you know his sense of humor is about as dark as a cup of coffee. But he's hilarious and knows how to ease the tension in a room by cracking a joke.

One of Mikeโ€™s greatest passions is teaching EMT classes and helping shape the next generation of providers. His hope is to leave the EMS and fire service world a little better than when he entered it and through his leadership, mentorship, and dedication, he is doing exactly that.

Also, in true Mike fashion, he was not present for picture day, so we had to work with what we had. Some say he was busy helping someone, others say he heard there was going to be smiling involved and decided to disappear.

Thank you, Captain Bagwell, for your years of commitment, sacrifice, leadership, and the questionable jokes that somehow keep morale high. We are incredibly proud to have you as part of the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company family.

Please join us in congratulating Madison "Maddie" Fluhart on passing the NREMT exam today and officially becoming a certified EMT!

Over the last 8 months, Maddie has been enrolled in an EMT class hosted by the Northampton County Department of EMS. Prior to beginning EMT training, she also successfully completed her firefighter I training, continuing to build an impressive foundation in the fire and EMS service.

What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that Maddie graduated high school less than a year ago and has ready achieved so much in such a short time. Her dedication, determination, and commitment to serving others have truly stood out every step of the way.

Throughout this entire journey, Maddie has had the unwavering support of her parents, who are also lifelong members of Bloxom VFC. Just like them, we are all incredibly proud of her and everything she has accomplished.

Congratulations Maddie! Your hard work has paid off, and we look forward to seeing all the great things ahead for you in the fire and EMS service. ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿš‘

On this International Firefighters Day, weโ€™re proud to recognize Assistant Chief Austin Bagwell and the dedication heโ€™s shown to the fire service over the years.

For Austin, this path wasnโ€™t a single moment of decisionโ€”it was something woven into his life from the very beginning. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the fire service, he was surrounded by it every day. By the time he officially joined in 2013, the firehouse already felt like a second home. From a young age, he knew this was where he belonged.

When asked who inspired him most, the answer came easilyโ€”his parents. Both volunteer and career firefighters, they set the example. Watching their commitment, their compassion, and the way they showed up for others left a lasting impression that shaped his own journey.

Now serving as Assistant Chief, Austin finds the greatest reward not just in the calls, but in the people. He takes pride in teaching and mentoring others, helping them build skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose within the fire service. Guiding the next generation is something he values deeply, knowing the impact it has on both individuals and the community.

And for those considering volunteering, his message is simple but powerful: itโ€™s about giving back. Itโ€™s about being there for your neighbors on what could be one of their worst days. Itโ€™s about learning, growing, and becoming part of a team that feels like family.

Today, we honor Assistant Chief Austin Bagwell for his years of service, his leadership, and his unwavering commitment to others. Thank you for everything you doโ€”and for continuing to inspire those who follow in your footsteps.

They say timing is everything...and while Deputy Chief Bagwell may have missed picture day, there was no chance we were going to miss the opportunity to recognize him. So consider this his 'officially unofficial' photo feature - same style, just with a little AI.

We're proud to introduce Deputy Chief W. Sean Bagwell, who has been serving in this role for an incredible 23 years. His fire service journey began back in January 1984 as a Cadet with Tasley Volunteer Fire Company, and by January 1987, he was continuing that path as a Junior Member with Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company. Decades later, he's still answering the call as a volunteer and career firefighter.

Like many in the fire service, his roots run deep. His biggest influence was his father, long-time member Snookie Bagwell - providing that dedication to the community is sometimes just part of the family tradition.

When asked what advice he'd give to upcoming members, Deputy Chief kept it simple and solid: "๐˜ฟ๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™—๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š๐™จ." No fluff, no shortcuts. Just the kind of mindset that builds a lasting career.

Whether he's in front of the camera or not, his impact is always front and center. Thank you Deputy Chief Bagwell for your years of leadership, commitment, and service.

We'll make sure he gets the memo for the next picture day! ๐Ÿ˜‚

As National Volunteer Week (April 19โ€“25) comes to a close, we didnโ€™t want to miss the chance to recognize the incredible individuals who give their time and dedication to our community.

Weโ€™re kicking things off by highlighting our very own Fire Chief, James T. Bagwell. Like many of our members, he graciously (and maybe just a little reluctantly ๐Ÿ˜‰) agreed to step in front of the camera as part of our volunteer spotlight series. Letโ€™s just sayโ€ฆ weโ€™re better at responding to calls than posing for photos!

A huge shoutout to Ashlin with Morning Moments Photography for stepping up and bringing this project to lifeโ€”we appreciate your patience and talent more than you know.

And of course, we couldnโ€™t stop thereโ€ฆ we also convinced Chief Bagwell to sit down for an interview with our media coordinator, Shannon. Stay tuned to learn more about the people behind the gear who serve this community every day.

Help us celebrate all of our volunteers this weekโ€”and every week.

๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸ ๐ŸŸก DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT๐ŸŸข๐Ÿ”ต๐ŸŸฃ

We want to start by giving a huge thank you to Manuel Salazar for organizing such an incredible dodgeball tournament! It truly takes a team to pull off an event like this, and weโ€™re so grateful to all of the volunteers who took time out of their day to help set up, tear everything down, work the cook trailer, and coordinate everything throughout the day. Your hard work did not go unnoticed.

A special shoutout to the amazing crew in the cook trailer for keeping everyone fueled all day long, serving up both breakfast AND lunch! The scrapple and bologna, egg and cheese sandwiches were so good! Tommy, Stephanie, Wayne, David, and Rich always know how to put out some seriously yummy eats.

Thank you as well to everyone who competedโ€”13 games full of hard-fought battles and great sportsmanship! While Bloxomโ€™s team didnโ€™t take home the win this time, weโ€™ve got to give major props to the last-minute, put-together team, DOUBLE TROUBLE, who went undefeated all day long. Thatโ€™s some serious work! Great job Jahlik, Mark, David, Nyquan, Steve, and Tony!

The event kicked off in the best way with Scott Stitely singing the National Anthem, setting the tone for an awesome day. DJ Walkbaby (Steve Walker) kept the energy high, with everyone singing and dancing along. Huge shoutout to him for keeping the vibes going and even jumping into the game and bringing home a win for his team!

Right before the games began, Station 6 was dispatched to a working residential fire in Sanford. Several of our volunteersโ€”some even scheduled to playโ€”answered the call. Engine 6-4 staff with 5 and Tanker 6-7 responded to the scene. Thankfully, it was a quick response by all stations. There was minimal damage to the home, and they made it back just in time for Bloxomโ€™s first game. That kind of dedication says it all.

Weโ€™d also like to thank our generous sponsors: The Sweet Spot, Penny Pincher Thrift Store, Eastern Shore Catering, West Plumbing, and Eder Up. Your support made this event possible. And thank you to Bloxom's media specialist, Shannon, for setting up the chinese auction and to everyone who contributed basket ideas!

A big shoutout to Nandua Middle Schoolโ€™s Beta Club for keeping things fun (and cool!) by running the dunking booth all day. What a perfect way to stay chilled when the sun is beaming down!

Shoutout to Station 6โ€™s own Cameron and Tatsiana for refereeing the games, and the dynamic sibling duo, Manuel and Shannon, for keeping the bracket running smoothly all day. We appreciate you all!

Crystal from Tri Meta Wellness Center stopped by to offer massages to work out the kinks. West Racing brought the 84w race car for photos, and Ryan showed off his freshly upgraded mud truck, Infernoโ€”both added an extra level of excitement to the event! Nate & Chrisโ€™ pop-up shop also joined as a vendor, bringing a great selection of goodies to sell, including sweet-smelling perfumes and oils.

Congratulations to our runner-ups, New Church Vol. Fire & Rescue Co., who also took time to open up their engine, along with Engine 6-4, so the community could take a closer look. We truly appreciate that.

Thank you to The Sweet Spot for also setting up a bounce house for the kiddos to enjoy while the grown-ups handled businessโ€”it was a big hit! My most delightful art teach that has ever existed, Ms. Gibbons, did face painting for the kids as well.

And we canโ€™t forget Macedonia Baptist Church for bringing the sweetsโ€”those brownies and cupcakes were too good to pass up!

All in all, it was an amazing day filled with fun, teamwork, and community spirit. Weโ€™re so thankful for everyone who came out and made it special. Weโ€™re already looking forward to doing it again next year!
