Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen Community Kitchen serves anyone in need. We serve meals to anyone in need six days a week from two locations.

Community Kitchen of Monroe County's mission is to work, alone and in collaboration with others, to eliminate hunger in Monroe County and surrounding areas, through direct service, education and advocacy. We also have programs targeting at-risk children and youth, taking meals and healthy snacks to them where they are.

It's Friday! For many folks this is a long weekend, but here at Community Kitchen we will be open for business as usual on Monday. We will be serving a hot meal at our main location (1515 S. Rogers), our Express location (1101 W 11th St.) and on our food truck, which will be on its regular Monday route.

If you're looking for volunteer opportunities this fall, reach out to me! I find myself in need of on-call volunteers on Saturdays. (Especially on days when there are IU football games.) My email is [email protected] and I can also be reached at the office from 8:00-4:00 M-F at 812-332-0999.

This will be a busy weekend in Bloomington with numerous events to attend. Have a safe and happy weekend with your families and friends!

Excited to share that you can support Community Kitchen all month long by rounding up your total at the register at both Bloomingfoods Co-op Market locations!

Even better: From September 1st through 7th, an anonymous donor is matching all round-ups dollar-for-dollar! That means every cent you donate during the first week does double the good for our neighbors.

Every dollar raised helps provide:
*Free, nutritious meals at our South Rogers dining room & Crestmont carry-out location
*Mobile meal delivery on our Bloomington and Ellettsville food truck routes
*Vital children’s food initiatives like Backpack Buddies and the Summer Food Service Program
*Direct hunger relief for local seniors, families, veterans, homebound individuals, and unhoused neighbors

In 2025 alone, Community Kitchen served 277,194 meals and snacks across Monroe County.

Shop at Bloomingfoods this September, round up your change at the checkout (or make a donation of any amount), and make a direct impact right here at home.

Thank you for making a Positive Change!

Monday update!

I promised to share Monday updates on how our food drive is going, so here is our first!

From now through October 3rd, every food item you donate does double the good! We’re on a mission to gather 1,000 of each of our 10 most-needed food items to support local youth, families and seniors across our community. To make your support go even further, a generous donor has stepped forward with a $10,000 matching gift that unlocks alongside your food donations. Every box, bag and can brings comfort, dignity and essential nourishment to a neighbor in need. Pick up a few extra items next time you shop. Drop off your donations by October 3rd and share the mission with your network so we can reach 10,000 items and $10,000, together!

We would like to receive 1,000 of each of these items. Here are our first week totals:
1. SPAM - 32
2. Canned chicken - 129
3. Meal helpers - 28
4. Cereal boxes – 10-12.5oz - 182
5. Small bread mixes (around 13oz or smaller) - 41
6. Small peanut butters (16oz) - 104
7. Boxes of fruit cups - 97
8. Cans of diced tomatoes - 97
9. Canned vegetables (other than corn or green beans) - 57
10. Short pasta - 59

That's a good start! Please help us keep going by bringing in some items as you can.

These food items are essential and most directly benefit our two largest programs: dinner meals and Backpack Buddies. Food items can be dropped off at our main location, 1515 S Rogers St, Monday thru Friday, 8am to 6:30pm or Saturdays from 11am to 6:30pm.

Short on time? Visit our Amazon or Wal-Mart Wish List and have your donation delivered directly to Community Kitchen!

My job at Community Kitchen leads me to seek out the bargains. Kroger has cereal for $1.49 this week, so I picked up a van full!!! As our numbers of Backpack Buddies keep growing for kiddos who need weekend meals, we need even more pantry items. If you’re shopping this weekend, consider picking up a few super cheap 10-12 oz boxes of cereal to donate! And why not get a box of fruity pebbles for yourself, too!

These cereal boxes also count toward our 10k for $10k match going on right now, too. All donations can be dropped off at 1515 S Rogers St from 8am-630pm, M-F and 11am-630pm on Saturdays.

This week will be week 4 of school and week 3 of Backpack Buddies. We've never started Backpack Buddies so fast and with such high numbers!

We started with 221 for the first week (the highest starting number ever) and did 337 last week!

As we look toward Thursday, we expect to pack around 400 Backpack Buddies bags. This is the fastest and highest start ever, for the program. We fully expect to have record numbers in this program in this 2026-27 school year.

These numbers make our current food drive: 10k for 10k even more important! Please help us bring in 1,000 items each, of these ten things:

1. SPAM
2. Canned chicken
3. Meal helpers
4. Cereal boxes – 10-12.5oz
5. Small bread mixes (around 13oz or smaller)
6. Small peanut butters (16oz)
7. Boxes of fruit cups
8. Cans of diced tomatoes
9. Canned vegetables (other than corn or green beans)
10. Short pasta

Thank you for continuing to support our local children through our Backpack Buddies program!
