Local Tarzan's Compassionate Wildlife Solutions

Local Tarzan's Compassionate Wildlife Solutions Compassionate Wildlife Solutions is an animal+human friendly answer for wildlife issues. McLean County based volunteer program. Hello!

My name is Chase "the Charlie" Cavalera aka The Local Tarzan. I am here to introduce myself so it may be known that there IS someone in McLean County who cares about our wildlife and can help out with humane and compassionate solutions to related issues. I have a background in veterinary medicine, wildlife, and private investigation. These skills have pointed me in the direction of my true calling

..that is, answering the call of the wild yet voiceless. Even my history in construction and landscaping coming in handy for creating a harmonious balance between the animals and humankind. I operate under the authority of the Dept of Natural Resourses and local Law Enforcement. All actions taken are not only designed to create quality of life for the greater good, but also in strict accordance with the law. I am the investigator, the negotiator, the ambulance, and the short term nurse. That being said, I am an independent entity, and an unfunded resource. Though home owners/tenants may be billed a nominal fee, most of my job description brings me to places like roadways, parks and public areas and my efforts are out of pocket. Monetary donations/contributions are always welcome. Proper safety equipment, tactical gear, medical supplies, my own vaccinations and permits and even fuel can become quite costly. I will be posting/reporting my related activities here so that anyone can see the volume of cases I handle.

Merry Christmas to all!
My heart grew 2 sizes in the past few days. Yesterday, Christmas Eve, Elsa the blonde squirrel from last fall came back home to visit. She had gotten injured pretty bad earlier this year. She came back, somehow, barely able to crawl, but I got her scooped up and Dr Fraker helped me get her fixed up. She isn't around often so when she came into the "loft" inside the house for a snack yesterday, I just melted. Hadn't seen her in quite a while. Prior to that, Uncle Buck (another fox squirrel who got his name for being helpful welcoming newbies) came by and did the same thing. When you're dealing with wildlife, you're bound to become attached to some of these characters and that means you get to worry about how they are doing in the wild. It's very relieving and heartwarming when they came visit and let you know they are doing ok. Makes it all worth it. As we know, that's not always the case. After all, it IS called wild life for a reason.
Everyone please have a safe and happy holiday week!

Good morning, everybody! Thought I'd share a short video of a squirrel called Sally. There aren't many pleasant things I can put on social media in the wildlife rescue world. Mostly I like to remain as positive and optimistic as possible. Thank you all for your support. Couldn't do it without you. We have recently reached the 81% mark for our annual goal. Thank you. This year has been a brutal one for my world but I won't boo hoo about that. Soon I'll be producing real videos again after the dust settles.
Thank you all for your contributions. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.

Y'all wanna see something cute? Meet Solo. He is a very young chipmunk that was brought to me with a fairly nightmarish injury. His throat was degloved by a cat. Must have missed any vital parts. Here you can see he healed up quickly and mastered the hamster wheel in a few days and then released in the sanctuary here.
Thank you all that have donated to the cause. We are very close to the annual goal. The critters and I truly appreciate your support.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!!
I've got a crazy "tale" for you that does end well. Unfortunately, I didn't have my GoPro so not sure if I'll make a video for this one but I can show the PG photos...so here we go..... First I get a call from concerned citizen who has often had a keen eye for wildlife issues. She reports that several squirrels are somehow joined at the tail(s). I rush over with some gear for what I thought could be sorted out on scene. Wrong. With all the foliage, I couldn't really tell what was going on. There was 5 adolescent fox squirrels that were very tangled and quite frustrated which caused the nest to fall. Mama squirrel, you can see on the tree was also pretty upset. Somehow she kept them alive. I told mama squirrel that I'd fix this and return them. Ended up taking all 5 and the nest to Prairie Oak Vet Center. They got me set up in a surgery room where I put the entire cluster into a tote we use for anesthesia. Once they were sleeping I was able to sort out the tails, sticks, leaves, maggots ...and a drawstring. Before anyone asks, yes, I do actually have a veterinary background. After separating them all we came to the conclusion that the tails were necrotic. They were tangled too long without blood flow and the bones were also broken. So, Dr Fraker, and some techs and myself commenced to amputation,.. assembly line style. Now amputation is never fun or funny, but I must say all of us working together to save these squirrels had a heart warming "family" feeling. It was like a Thanksgiving vibe for me. So, Dr Fraker did 5 sweet tail dockings in a row. Then the squirrels were given pain meds and antibiotics. They had to be under observation for a few days, so they went to a special acclimation/quarantine type habitat that I built. They all did great. But how was I going to get them back to their mother as promised. Well, inside said habitat, there was a squirrel house and they all learned to sleep and hide inside it. So, I covered the hole with mesh and detached the whole house. Then, went back to the tree they came from. Screwed the house to the tree and removed the mesh. Now I'd have loved to see Mama squirrel meet up with me and her babies, but wildlife doesn't usually cooperate with my cinematic vision. I did, however, check in Tuesday and was told they seem to be doing great. I'm sure the neighbors are wondering why there are so many nub tailed squirrels in one location. Sorry for the long story but I hope it can bring you some joy.

In other news, thank you all for your vigilance and support. Can't happen without ya. We have recently reached the 65% mark of the annual goal. Thank you so much! Remember to call/text 309-242-2123 for your wildlife concerns. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend, y'all!

This photo may seem ridiculous upon first viewing. Me giving a deer subcutaneous fluids?? Yes, but I assure you that I had a reason. She was found in a cold pond and couldn't get out. The home owners tried to get her, but to no avail. It took the fire dept to get her onto shore. She was brought up to temperature and still wouldn't get up or drink/eat. Hence ..the fluids. Dr Fraker and Co came out too. We all tried but apparently she had some kind of neurological injury and could not be saved. I'm sorry.

Swan at large!

A couple weeks ago this swan was loitering in traffic on veteran's near the Portillos area. I moved him off of the highway and over to the pond near Aldi's and could see that all his functions were...well functioning. Yesterday he was seen in someone's yard. Loitering again. Haha. One might consider avian bird flu, but honestly, he'd be a goner by now if that was the case. Perhaps, he's just a free spirit? Thank you all for your keen senses and support.

Good morning, everyone!

The importance of keeping a positive disposition...

Got a somewhat humorous story for you. Last week I was leaving the house and took the ol' rescue Tahoe. Less than a block from the house a squirrel runs out in front of me. Of course I jam on the brake. I then put it park and get out to check. He made it across the street and is fine. I proceed to give him a verbal warning/lecture as you can bet I probably know him. Get back, and at the next stop sign, the brake pedal goes to the floor. I'm close to home so I limp the Tahoe back home and call my mechanic.
Apparently, I blew a brake line. Figured as much. But if you know anything about cars, you can could guess that all the brakes lines (from 2005) are rusting thru and need to be replaced. Those and other brake parts are a pricy repair and that's not fun, BUT....I feel lucky that once again a car issue happened close to home. No one was hurt, didn't crash the Tahoe and now I'll have a new brake system. So, I'm not too bummed. Here is a cute pic of Uncle Buck. He is NOT the jaywalker in this story, but thought I'd share. He's a good dude. Btw, thank you all that have been donating to the cause here. We recently hit the 47% mark of the 2025 goal. Thanks again!!

Howdy y'all! Great news. I was finally able to catch the mangy fix that was hanging around the campus after many attempts. I took him to rehab where he has already gotten his first dose of meds and on his way to recovery.
Thank you for your vigilance and patience. Catching a fox is no easy task.
Thank you all that have donated to keep this service afloat. We have reach 20% of our annual goal,
