O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University

O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University The O'Neill School was created to address the complex issues that face society today, issues one field of study alone can’t solve.

The O’Neill School of Public and Environment Affairs (SPEA) works to build a better world by stewarding the development of equitable and inclusive societies, democratic governance, and a healthy, sustainable environment. We prepare students for careers in public service, business and nonprofit management with versatile degrees that let them move seamlessly among all three. Our faculty are engaged in relevant and cutting edge research dedicated to finding solutions for the common good.

Leading for the greater good sometimes means rolling up your sleeves.

O’Neill faculty Jennifer Brass and Karen Gahl-Mills recently volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity Monroe County Women+ Build, a tradition they’ve shared for several years. This year, they were joined by O’Neill Public Affairs Ph.D. student Katelyn Rousch.

Together with fellow volunteers, they helped put up all the trusses on a new Habitat home—putting public service into practice and helping build a stronger community.

Find your passion. Answer the call to public service. Make a difference.

At O’Neill Launch, MPA alum and Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun challenged our newest undergrads to think about the impact they can make through lives of leadership and service.

His message was clear: Our communities—and our nation—need more O’Neills.

To our newest students: Welcome to O’Neill. We’re so glad you’re here.

Throughout the fall, spring, and summer terms of 2025–26, O’Neill students completed 545 internships across 50 Indiana counties, contributing nearly 80,000 hours of hands-on work.

Across the state, students put their education into action—supporting local governments, strengthening emergency preparedness, advancing sustainability, contributing to public safety and healthcare, and helping businesses and organizations address real-world challenges.

From Gary to Indianapolis and Steuben County to Fort Wayne, these experiences are more than internships. They’re an investment in Indiana’s communities, organizations, and future workforce.
