CSBM invites local children and their families to join us for a festive Winter Wonderland and Holidays Around the World celebration at the Banneker Community Center (930 W 7th St) on Saturday, December 9, from noon to 4:00 p.m. This free event promises an array of seasonal activities, including arts and crafts, cookie decorating, holiday carols, complimentary photos with Santa, and a toy giveaway. Embracing the spirit of diversity, the event will also showcase holidays around the world.

This year, a special two-hour sensory-sensitive experience from noon to 2 p.m., thoughtfully designed for families seeking a gentle atmosphere with low-light and low-sound settings will take place. Families interested in capturing photos with Santa in this sensory-sensitive environment can schedule appointments at bloomington.in.gov/csbm, during the designated time. For those who prefer to skip the photo session but would like to partake in the sensory sensitivity experience, feel free to join us between noon and 2 p.m.

The City of Bloomington invites the community to attend the 19th Annual Black History Month Gala, which will take place on Saturday, February 25, beginning at 6 p.m. The ticketed, public event will be held at Woolery Mill (2250 W. Sunstone Dr. Bloomington IN, 47403). Tickets are available in advance through the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, online at bctboxoffice.org, or by phone at 812-323-3020.

The gala offers an opportunity to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans who have devoted their time, talents, and resources to make a difference in the Bloomington community and beyond. The theme for the 2022 Black History Month celebration is β€œBlack Innovation," honoring, celebrating, and exploring Black inventors, creators, and change agents and how Black innovators changed the way we live through their contributions, from the traffic light to the cell phone. Most people have heard about famous inventions like the light bulb, the cotton gin, and the ironing board. But there are countless other, often overlooked creators and inventions that make our daily lives easier.

Hosted by Sachet Watson and James Sanders, this year's event will include a silent auction, and a ceremony to recognize the 2023 Black History Month Living Legend award recipients, Dr. Charlie and Jeanetta Nelms. In addition, the event salutes the four young residents being recognized as the 2023 Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow by the City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males. This year's recipients are Andrew McKinzie, Tatiana Wheeler, D'Andre Black, and Sydney Crossley.
