Prep minutes are crucial to high quality teaching and learning, and prep time is necessary for teachers to achieve any sort of work-life balance. Wages are stagnant; new curriculum is abundant; and teachers are trying their best to show up for kids. Teacher and educator members across Monroe County agree: we NEED more weekly prep minutes, not less.

Some contract highlights: This was a tough year to bargain. State and federal funding is down and regularly under attack, and our district’s past decision-making has left MCCSC in a tough spot. Our members agreed to a less-than-ideal contract because we want to keep schools open, staffed, and supported. Our team worked with administration to ease financial hits (increase in employer medical contribution) and add low-cost benefits (increase in parental leave). Looking to the future, teachers are STRESSED about stagnant salaries paired with rising inflation and increasing utility costs. Let’s start brainstorming now. How can future budgets and contracts keep up with cost-of-living in our county? Keep an eye on future posts to see some ideas we’ve been thinking about… 🤔💭

We’re worried about this one! How will districts respond if school resources officers (SROs) are asked to act on behalf of ICE? How does this interact with the precedent of Plyler v Doe (1982) where the Supreme Court ruled that stated cannot deny children a free and public education on the basis of immigration status? How does ICE in schools help kids learn?
