Bloomington has plenty of imagination. Now Kirkwood needs a plan to match.

After extensive input from residents, downtown businesses, City staff, and community members, Mayor Kerry Thomson has vetoed the Common Council’s Ordinance 2026-12. Many people who supported the ordinance—and many who opposed it—are reaching toward the same vision: a Kirkwood that feels alive, welcoming, accessible, and unmistakably Bloomington.

The opportunity before us is to move from that shared aspiration to a plan shaped by the people it will affect and one that the City can successfully fund, deliver, and sustain.

Community food access + investments in energy-efficient resources = a win for our entire city.

Thanks to a recent $45,000 grant through our Solar, Energy Efficiency, & Lighting program, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard has brand-new solar and energy storage systems. The equipment helps prevent power outages and keeps fridges running longer, reducing the risk of food loss.

Investments in clean energy mean more resources for our community—and a healthier, more resilient future for everyone. Thanks to everyone who worked together to make this investment possible. Learn about the program on our website: bton.in/seel

A strong community begins with inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Thank you so much to Girls Inc. of Monroe County for hosting a great panel discussion on civic engagement featuring Mayor Thomson, State Senator Shelli Yoder, and County Council President Jennifer Crossley! We talked about the various functions of government, our democratic rights, and how public participation can make a difference.

We're grateful to celebrate and encourage our future leaders who are learning about government and civic engagement early on. By supporting their growth today, we’re building a bright future together!
