On Sunday, June 14, join us in watching “Rise Up, Sing Out: A Concert for the First
Amendment,” an uplifting evening of song, solidarity, and action. Featuring an all-star lineup
of performers, this free 90-minute livestreamed concert will celebrate the freedoms
guaranteed by our First Amendment—of speech, religion, press, and protest—and the people
power that protects them.
The watch party will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington. Here we
can sing along, find inspiration in the performances, build community, and plan meaningful
action together. Popcorn will be served, but please bring your own (non-alcoholic) drinks.
Offered by the Committee for the 1st Amendment, the concert will run from 7 to 8:30 pm.
Doors open at 6:30 for socializing; at 6:45, we’ll introduce the main event, with background
and a look at local/state threats to our First Amendment rights. At 8:30 we’ll have time to talk
about what we’ve learned and tell each other about ways to confront threats to our rights.
The evening is sponsored by the Uplands Network of the Sierra Club and the UUCB Green
Sanctuary Task Force. UUCB is at 2120 N Fee Lane, where Fee Lane crosses the 45/46 bypass .

Next week! Don't miss out on the annual Juneteenth Celebration presented by the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, African Arts Institute and City of Bloomington.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day, marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has long been recognized as a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and progress within Black communities across the United States. Today, Juneteenth offers communities across the country an opportunity for celebration, reflection, and shared learning. In 2021, Juneteenth became the nation’s 11th federal holiday, recognizing its enduring importance in American history and culture.

The celebration will feature food trucks, live performances and vendors from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Switchyard park, along with community organizations and informational booths sharing local resources, services, and ways to get involved.

People all across Indiana are hurting, and too many folks in power act like they don’t see it. Families are working harder than ever and still falling behind. Rent and groceries keep going up, small farms are struggling to survive, hospitals in rural communities are closing their doors, and working people are being told to do more with less every year. Young people are buried in debt or stuck in jobs that don’t pay enough to build a future, while older Hoosiers are choosing between medicine, groceries, and keeping the lights on. And while all of this is happening, national organizations continue to overlook states like Indiana, especially the rural parts. The truth is hard, but simple: nobody is coming to save us. If we want a better future for our communities, we have to build it ourselves.

That starts with investing in the people already doing the work. We need to support rural organizers with real tools, training, and resources so they can fight for their neighbors and stand up for their communities. Real change does not come from political consultants flying in every election season; it comes from local folks who know the people and their struggles, and understand exactly what their communities are up against.

For too long, young people in our small towns have been told that if they want a decent life, they have to leave home behind. We have to change that narrative - we have to give them something different. We have to give them the chance to make their hometowns stronger, safer, and full of opportunity for everyone.

That future starts now. There’s an old saying that the wisest person plants a tree knowing they may never sit in its shade - that’s the work in front of us today. Every conversation, every organizer, every young leader we invest in is a seed being planted for the future. The work may not pay off overnight, but if we start building now, we can leave the next generation an Indiana worth fighting for. Join us this Sunday to plant these seeds - get your tickets today!
